With the TVA destroyed, Loki Season 2 Episode 5, “Science/Fiction,” looks at an existence without the TVA. Loki (Tom Hiddleston) manages to be the only person who survives the meltdown of the Temporal Loom and must get the gang back together in order to try and save the TVA and restore life as we know it. Directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead and written by Eric Martin, there’s a lot to take away from this week’s episode. We finally get to see Mobius (Owen Wilson) on his jet ski, we learn about the lives that the other TVA agents had, and Loki discovers a way to control his ability to time slip. In the penultimate episode, we do a lot of jumping around across timelines and across universes, but the episode actually hinges on the most major growth we’ve seen in Loki’s character since we first met him back in 2011 in Thor.

‘Loki’ Puts Us at the Heart of the Story in Episode 5

It might seem silly for me to say that I’m glad a show titled Loki is actually about Loki, but considering recent showings from the MCU (and Disney+) with their television shows, it feels like these shows serve more as a launching board for other projects. So it’s been nice watching Loki and watching a show so dedicated to exploring the growth and development of its titular character. When it was announced that Loki would be getting his own show a few years back based around a variant of Loki who stole the time stone during The Avengers, many fans worried that we would lose what made Loki so great. He had all that development through Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok, not to mention the handful of other MCU movies where he played a significant role, and he was going to lose it?

It’s good to know that despite losing that version of Loki, the one from Loki is somehow infinitely better. He’s no longer simply attached to his brother or his family; he’s his own person, and we have watched him evolve in front of our eyes. So it doesn’t feel out of left field or cheesy when Loki says that he wants to save the TVA because he wants his friends back. We’ve watched him develop close friendships with the other agents at the TVA and become invested in their lives. That emotional beat feels entirely earned.

What Happens in ‘Loki’ Season 2 Episode 5?

The episode kicks off with Loki on his own at the TVA. Everyone is gone and the TVA has kicked into fail-safe mode. Searching for anyone, Loki begins to time-slip again. This time, he isn’t just time slipping within the TVA. As the TVA turns into spaghetti, he time-slips away and next appears in 1962 in a branched timeline near Alcatraz. Here, he finds Casey (Eugene Cordero) — except this is not the Casey we know, this is Frank, a career criminal currently trying to escape Alcatraz with his fellow prisoners. Throughout the episode, Loki is pulled through time and space, but where he ends up is not random; instead, he appears at the location of each of his friends. He sees B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku), who is now a doctor named Dr. Willis in 2012 New York. He sees O.B. (Ke Huy Quan), who is an author/scientist named A.D. Doug in 1994 Pasadena. And he finds Mobius, now named Don, at a jet ski shop in 2022 Cleveland.

Out of all of them, O.B. seems the least surprised when Loki sits him down and tells him about the TVA and everything that’s happened to them. Maybe it’s because he’s a science fiction author, maybe it’s because he teaches theoretical physics at Caltech. Regardless, O.B. deduces that the time slipping must be attached to Loki and what he wants. Although the TVA is gone, Loki does time slip to a time theater like the one we saw him in in Season 1, which suggests that in some capacity the TVA is still around. O.B. decides that they need to assemble everyone in that room together to get their group temporal aura so they can transport back to that spot in time and space. He’s given the TVA guidebook by Loki to build a tempad, but before Loki can say anything else, he time slips to Cleveland.

Loki approaches Mobius, who has no idea who he is and is initially apprehensive of him until O.B. appears through a time door from his homemade tempad. Mobius, in this universe, is a single dad to two sons and has a seemingly comfortable life selling jet skis. But Loki convinces him that he should help because all of existence is in danger, including the lives of his children. After some persuading, Mobius agrees to go with them, and Loki and O.B. assemble the rest of the team before going to collect Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino).

Returning back to the McDonald’s in 1982, Loki approaches Sylvie, ready to give her his speech about the TVA — but unlike the other variants, Sylvie remembers him and has all of her memories intact. Rather than go with him back to the group, she takes him out for a drink. There, at the bar, they return to their previous argument, the one they’ve been having all season: Free will or control? Loki is determined to save the TVA and is baffled by Sylvie’s selfishness for wanting her own life.

To this, Sylvie agrees: she is selfish. She wants a life, she wants to live. “What’s wrong with wanting something, Loki?” she asks him. Knowing that the rest of the group have their own lives on their own timelines, Sylvie is content to let them stay there. They were never given a choice to join the TVA, but Loki disagrees and says that agents like Mobius called the TVA their purpose, and he should be given a chance to choose between the branched timeline life and his life at the TVA.

But after all of this, after Sylvie prods Loki for a true answer, Loki reveals that he wants the TVA back because he wants his friends back. He doesn’t want to be alone, and, in his own way, this is him being selfish as well. Loki isn’t doing this to save existence; at a very base level, he doesn’t know where he belongs without the TVA, which has been his struggle since the very beginning of his story. Long before the TVA was even a thought in Kevin Feige‘s mind, Loki was a kid pulled from his home and raised by a conquerer. He has never truly belonged anywhere.

When Sylvie rejects Loki’s offer to join up with the other agents, she tells him that they must all write their own stories now and leaves him at the bar. Bereft and confused about what to do next, Loki returns to O.B. and the gang uncertain of how to proceed. Meanwhile, Sylvie visits a record shop and puts on The Velvet Underground‘s “Oh! Sweet Nuthin’,” which is a fitting soundtrack to the end of her world. Everything around her slowly spaghettifies, and realizing that everything has fallen apart, she uses He Who Remains’ tempad to go to Loki.

With Sylvie there, the group can finally collect everyone’s temporal aura and go back to that specific place in time — except it’s too late. Slowly, each of the characters spaghettify in front of Loki. The whole world disappears into strands of temporal spaghetti and it’s at this moment that he time slips and jumps right back to moments before. Realizing he is now getting a handle on his time slipping, Loki knows what he has to do to rewrite the story. He goes back to the point in time right before someone goes through the blast doors. Is it before Mobius goes to pull him out of the timeline in Episode 1, or is it before Victor Timely (Jonathan Majors) goes out onto the platform in Episode 4? Only time will tell.

Loki Season 2 Episode 5 Post-Credits Scene Explained

After the credits roll on Loki season 2 episode 5, with Loki’s game-changing new superpower revealed, and his plan to save the Temporal Loom, the TVA, and all existence unveiled, a stinger calls back to one of the show’s deepest Marvel cuts. In an audio only post-credits gag, a voice shouts “you died, insert a coin, LOSER!” Out of context, it means very little, but Loki season 2 episode 5 set up the joke earlier in the episode.

After Loki brings together OB, Casey, Mobius and B-15 to undo the destruction of the Temporal Loom, he tries to recruit Sylvie, who rejects his offer, but takes him to a bar to invite him to explore exactly why he wants to save the TVA. The opening shot in the bar shows a Zaniac! arcade game, clearly adapted from the same movie Brad Wolfe (Rafael Casal) starred in when he returned to the timeline in episode 2. The audio stinger that forms Loki season 2 episode 5’s post-credits scene is the Game Over message from the same arcade machine.

Why Loki Season 2 Episode 5’s Post-Credits Scene Works So Well

Intriguingly, Loki‘s audio-only post-credits scene is the first time there’s ever been a vocal track played in place of a true stinger, but it’s not the first time the MCU has used an audio post-credits scene. The first time, notably, was at the end of Avengers: Endgame, when the sound of Iron Man forging the Mark 1 armor was played as a touching tribute to Robert Downey Jr’s fallen hero.

In place of a tribute to a dead MCU hero, Loki’s newest post-credits scene instead pokes fun at the audience, playing on the concept of Game Over message culture in video games, and the very idea of waiting until the end of the credits (insulting us all as “losers” for doing so. But also, the “loser” message is a loaded one: Loki confirmed – in a mantra repeated in season 2 episode 5 – that Lokis are destined to lose. The hidden meaning here is that despite dying (and almost dying multiple times), Loki didn’t give up: he may be a loser (and embrace the fact), but a Game Over message is just another opportunity to try again.

A novella from King’s If It Bleeds collection, The Life of Chuck plays with the concept of time, telling the life story of a man with a brain tumor by going through the course of his life backwards. The King novella begins when Charles “Chuck” Krantz is middle-aged and dying, then takes readers through his earlier years. Of course, Chuck’s brain tumor messes with his perception of reality, so The Life of Chuck doesn’t just upend linear time. It also makes it difficult to tell what’s real and what isn’t, making for a twisty and sometimes confusing ride.

While Loki and The Life of Chuck are vastly different in terms of plot, both stories break away from a linear concept of time. With Loki season 2 diving headfirst into Marvel’s multiverse, Hiddleston’s Loki and his companions slip through time periods and even beyond time. This is preparing Hiddleston for his role in The Life of Chuck, getting him used to the jumping around and the complexity that comes with it.

Capturing Chuck at various points in his life will also require Hiddleston to tweak his performance from one iteration of his character to the next. This is something he’s had to do numerous times as Loki’s changed in the MCU. Needless to say, Hiddleston’s Marvel role has set him up for The Life of Chuck in ways he may not even realize.

Loki season 2’s mid-season trailer promises we “won’t believe what’s coming” next, but thanks to some leaked intel we might be able to make a shrewd guess. According to the latest goss, the TVA will return in Deadpool 3 before playing a key role in Avengers: Secret Wars. While this is exciting to hear, it’s not exactly doing much to boost hype for the incoming The Marvels, which has already been suffering from a dangerous level of apathy from audiences ahead of its release. Sure, not every new Marvel thing has to set up the next thing, but Loki season 2 teeing up The Marvels instead of DP3, would’ve been nice. As it is, it looks like The Marvels has been forced to play its final hand.

With just 10 days to go until Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers blasts back onto our screens, Marvel has apparently decided it needs to pull the rip chord amid weaker-than-expected box office projections (when a dirt-cheap horror flick like Five Nights at Freddys is in danger of outperforming a Marvel film, something’s up). The latest promo seems to confirm that the movie will feature some surprise multiversal flavoring and collide with another reality. Even if my personal theory, that it’s simply the Noor Dimension from Ms. Marvel, plays out, this is nonetheless a clever tactic from the studio to ramp up excitement. We’ll see if it makes a difference come Nov. 10.

Brace yourselves, but the latest Blade update is actually good news for a change

We needed some kind of encouraging update about the horror side of the MCU this Halloween and, maybe because the universe owes us one after screwing over Marvel’s 2024 slate, that’s exactly what we’ve got. Although we’ve got used to the eternally tormented Blade facing bad news after bad news, a recent rumor that it was in “serious jeopardy” of being canned has been quashed before it could catch fire. While it’s still unlikely to make its scheduled September 2024 release, at least Mahershala Ali’s Daywalker will stake his way onto the scene eventually. Well, unless this was a Halloween trick not a treat…

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy secretly existing in its own rival MCU is just one small example of the multiversal mayhem that swirls around the Marvel news cycle daily, so don’t go anywhere.

Anyone who saw that door (you know the one) in the season 2 premiere of Loki instantly joined the dots between what’s already been established as a pivotal entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga and the impending arrival of the X-Men, at least until it was shut down.

While there’s always a chance they could be lying, the creative team behind the Disney Plus series claiming they didn’t have a clue what door anybody was talking about was another example from a fandom that has a habit of reading too far between lines that may or may not even be there, but the latest rumors swirling around Deadpool 3 are set to tell the opposite story.

Set photos and the returns of both Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Jennifer Garner’s Elektra have made it abundantly clear Ryan Reynolds’ return as the Merc with a Mouth will be a key part of folding the MCU’s many realities together ahead of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars, but fresh scuttlebutt has gone into a little more detail.

According to self-professed “scooper” MyTimetoShineHello, Deadpool 3 will tie directly into Loki‘s upcoming finale by following the TVA seeking out the “prime” versions of key superheroes in order to recruit a multiversal army capable of taking on the Council of Kangs, with Jackman’s mutton-chopped mutant near the top of the list.

In addition, fellow tipster CanWeGetSomeToast offers that Deadpool using Cable’s time machine puts him directly in the TVA’s crosshairs, and when he finds out about the aforementioned multiversal army, he mounts an escape and sets about convincing Wolverine to be his ally.

Of course, it isn’t anywhere close to being confirmed, but after being drawn in by a false dawn already, it certainly sounds as though Deadpool 3 will prove itself as the treasure trove of X-Men Easter Eggs and connective tissue we’ve all been waiting for.

‘Loki’ Finds Itself in Danger of Ripping off a $2.8 Billion Behemoth as Tom Cruise’s Absence From the MCU Can Be Traced Back to a Disastrously Bad DC Film- Armessa Movie News

It’s been an exciting few days at Marvel following Loki’s brain-busting episode 4 cliffhanger. The fandom continues to fire off compliments on all cylinders and eagerly touts the Disney Plus series as the new savior of the MCU

However, a newly released mid-season promo for the remainder of Loki season 2 has raised doubts over the studio’s originality, especially when viewed through the lens of the MCU’s highest-grossing movie. Speaking of which money — had Hollywood entirely skipped over George Clooney’s worst (and only) outing as the Caped Crusader, one of cinema’s highest-paid actors of all time, Tom Cruise, might have actually graced the superhero studio by now. 

Elsewhere, the box office is experiencing a shocking surge in ticket sales for Five Nights at Freddy’s. So much so that Brie Larson’s second outing as Captain Marvel is feeling more and more like a letdown waiting to happen (box office speaking). 

Loki’s ingenuity is starting to smell a lot like Avengers: Endgame

When a movie or TV show uses time travel as a narrative device, it’s hard to veer from the genre’s most obvious trope i.e. going back in time to fix the present day. Loki hasn’t followed that structure exactly, but it has used a variation of it, what with Loki pruning himself. In the mid-season trailer, Loki appears to be the only person still in possession of his memory while Mobius, Casey, and everyone else at the TVA are living the variant versions of their lives. Should the final two episodes end with Loki wrangling his friends back to the TVA, fixing his time-slipping, and solving the Temporal Loom’s overcapacity problem in one fell swoop, it’ll essentially be a regurgitated version of Avengers: Endgame, which is to say Marvel has reached the end of its rope in terms of originality. 

The MCU could’ve had Tom Cruise but Batman & Robin had to go and ruin it

Before the MCU was a thing — before even Blade, X-Men, or Spider-Man turned the world onto superhero films — Tom Cruise’s price tag to become Iron Man on the silver screen was too risky of an investment for 20th Century Fox to gamble on, especially given the dismal reception to 1997’s Batman & Robin. Cruise’s “asking fee at the time was more than even a profitable studio like Fox was willing to risk on an untested superhero property,” notes MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, an in-depth book documenting the MCU’s assent to worldwide box office domination. Now that the MCU is the most successful film franchise of all time, however, Cruise’s asking price is but a quarter between the cushions of a couch for Marvel, and what better place to make the bygone dream a reality than a multiversal playground wherein variant versions of our beloved superheroes can run amok right beside each other. Just sayin’. Your move, as always, Marvel. 

The Marvels could become the next Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny if Five Nights at Freddy’s has anything to say about it

The Marvels and Five Nights at Freddy’s couldn’t be more opposite, but so were Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and that small film starring Jim Caviezel from earlier this year, Sound of Freedom. The latter two found themselves lumped into conversation due to Sound of Freedom’s modest budget ($14.5 million) and eventual box office profit ($217.3 million) compared to Dial of Destiny’s bloated budget ($300 million) and eventually box office loss ($383 million). 

The Marvels has a budget of around $275 million whereas Five Nights at Freddy’s invested only $20 million. We don’t know how The Marvels will perform yet, but FNaF has already made $132 million globally within just 72 hours; The Marvels will need to climb higher, further, faster to compete against the video game adaptation given that the Brie Larson film is expected to perform 50% worse than it’s billion-dollar predecessor Captain Marvel. Still, 50% worse than a $1.1 billion movie is over half a million. If FNaF can beat that, then the MCU might really be in the endgame now.

Born Again’ Goes Crawling Back to Netflix for Inspiration and Salvation as ‘Loki’ Admits It Isn’t Making Much Sense- Armessa Movie News

One of the biggest concerns the Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom had about Daredevil: Born Again was the potential for Kevin Feige to completely disregard what made the Netflix original so popular in the first place in favor of folding it into the franchise’s standard and decidedly less gritty formula.

As it turned out, those concerns were so valid the studio scrapped the reboot in its initial iteration and started again, recruiting a Netflix veteran to lead the charge in irony of the most delicious variety. Elsewhere, the people behind Loki are even admitting that it doesn’t make much sense, while Taylor Swift continues to be spotted out and about with the director of Deadpool 3.

The MCU’s first official showrunner happens to be a veteran of Netflix’s Defenders Saga

You couldn’t really make it up, but after Daredevil: Born Again was abandoned in its current form and given a creative overhaul that saw Marvel finally acquiesce to following the rules of TV and hiring a showrunner to oversee the proceedings, the person chosen has experience in Netflix’s Marvel universe.

Dario Scardapane, who served as a writer and executive producer on The Punisher, will be the MCU’s first-ever official showrunner, and it’s somewhere between fascinating and hilarious that Kevin Feige has sought assistance from somebody who was embedded in the universe the first stab at Born Again tried so hard to distance itself from that it ended up falling apart.

You’re allowed to feel better after the people who made Loki admit things are confusing

Trying to make sense of Loki has proven a lot more difficult second time around, and matters aren’t helped by the key creatives admitting that things aren’t quite as straightforward as even the characters within the show believe them to be.

Lead writer and executive producer Eric Martin reflected on the exchange between OB and Victor Timely that seemingly ignored the MCU’s rules of time travel as established by Avengers: Endgame by stating that “we don’t even quite understand what that means yet,” a sentiment a lot of viewers have been sharing since the premiere.

Deadpool 3 director hits the town with Taylor Swift, but stays silent on that cameo

There’s going to be riots in the aisles and pandemonium in the streets if Taylor Swift doesn’t swing by Deadpool 3 at this rate, with director Shawn Levy celebrating his ingratiation into the singer and occasional actress’ inner circle by voicing his enthusiasm at getting “dad cred” from his daughters.

Obviously, hanging out with someone doesn’t mean they’re guaranteed to be in a movie, but Swift being spotted with not just Levy but Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in recent times is stating a compelling case that she’ll play at least a small part.

One of the many conspiracies to have swirled around the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the Multiverse Saga ushered in a clear and obvious downturn in quality is that Kevin Feige’s apparent obsession with Rick and Morty is to blame, and it’s not one that’s entirely without merit.

Not to state the obvious, but there’s a lot of people out there who despise She-Hulk: Attorney at Law a great deal more than others, but it wouldn’t be inaccurate to call Jessica Gao’s contributions to the franchise polarizing. Meanwhile, fellow alum Jeff Loveness penned the screenplay for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which ranks as the MCU’s worst-reviewed feature film to date.

Michael Waldron did gain approval for the first season of Loki, but that didn’t extend to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, leaving fans plenty concerned that the latter two Rick and Morty veterans have been tasked to whip Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars into shape. However, what hasn’t been mentioned as much is that Eric Martin – lead writer of the Asgardian trickster’s second season – knows Waldron from grad school and also played a part on multiple episodes of the animated favorite.

And yet, after he revealed that Multiverse of Madness took up so much of Waldron’s time that he was left to essentially bring Loki‘s first run of episodes across the finish line, he’s ironically become the first Rick and Morty veteran to win widespread praise for their MCU efforts.

We’re not saying the sentiment is 100 percent accurate and entirely on the money, but it’s easy to see how those dots have been connected. Rick and Morty is polarizing enough on its own thanks to its recent controversies, and that seems to have extended through to the MCU.

Loki Season 2 has greatly expanded its cast of characters, adding more to its repertoire as well as fleshing out the pre-existing cast. And with great characters come great interactions — most notably Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Mobius (Owen Wilson), an unexpected combo that’s proven to have some of the best chemistry in the entirety of the MCU, but it extends beyond them. There’s also the delightful interaction from Episode 4 between O.B. (Ke Huy Quan) and Victor Timely (Jonathan Majors), who both happen to be each other’s biggest fans and are absolutely giddy to meet each other despite the impending doom. But the pair that deserved more screen time is none other than resident TVA menaces General Dox (Kate Dickie) and X-5 (Rafael Casal).

After meeting them in the Season 2 premiere, it isn’t until this episode that they reappear together, and it’s unfortunately short-lived (especially for Dox, RIP). Regardless of the screen time, their dynamic together was an intriguing one, and it would have been great to see more interaction between the two.

Dox and X-5 Have a History We May Never Know About

Not having appeared in the first season of Loki, Dox and X-5 are new characters to us but, like everyone else who works at the Time Variance Authority, have been in servitude at the TVA for eons. X-5 is a Hunter similar to B-15, and Dox is a General of the TVA. Both are driven towards their goals perhaps in a way that is more detrimental than beneficial, but they’re dedicated nonetheless. When we first meet them, they are engaged in conversation around the morality of pruning branches, we learn through her words (and later, her actions) that Dox wants to keep things as they were, pruning all branches regardless of the harm it causes. X-5 doesn’t appear to have as firm a stance, but it is clear he will side with Dox on the matter. When the meeting doesn’t go Dox’s way, she sends X-5 off to find Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) (an event that becomes the catalyst for his whole Brad era), and the two share an odd embrace. It’s just as uncomfortable for B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) as it is for us at home — we see her perplexed expression reflect ours, trying to piece together what the relationship is.

The two put their foreheads together and embrace before X-5 departs. It feels more maternal than romantic, but doesn’t make the moment any less absurd. With no follow-up or explanation of their relationship, we’re left to speculate. The most obvious explanation is that Dox has established a rapport with her soldiers and this is a reflection of that. While it isn’t touched upon in any capacity, it does add some heartbreaking context to their most recent interaction in Episode 4.

General Dox Has a Change of Heart in ‘Loki’ Season 2, Episode 4

Trapped in the holding cell together, X-5 and Dox are reunited for the first time since the premiere. Dox and her TVA minutemen are all facing punishment for their rogue mission to prune branches, and X-5 is still in detainment for his escapades on the Sacred Timeline. X-5 tries to rally the group to get back to their lives on the timeline, but after he tries to quote Galileo, Dox calls him on his BS and reveals that she knows he abandoned their mission and sold them out to pursue his life as Brad on the Sacred Timeline.

This catches X-5 off guard and shuts him up, but we see he still has respect for Dox when B-15 enters. Standing behind his general with his hands on his collar, the same way he did before he broke Brad, he watches as B-15 extends a proposition. Dox’s actions against the branched timelines are reprehensible and one of the most horrific things to happen in the MCU, but B-15 acknowledges that beneath the genocidal tactics, Dox genuinely cares about the TVA and only wants to protect it. As B-15 points out, they obviously have different views on TVA politics, but they’re united in their love of the place. B-15’s leap of faith in extending trust out to Dox is enough to convince her to realign her perspective, and she has a change of heart. When Ravonna (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) appears through a Time Door to break them out, Dox and her minutemen stay put in solidarity with the TVA. Despite absolutely loathing Dox for her genocidal actions, it’s heartwarming to see her stand against Ravonna. The same, however, can’t be said about X-5.

Brad Wolfe Chooses His Life on the Sacred Timeline Over the TVA

Given the same option by Ravonna, X-5 makes the decision to help her and Miss Minutes (Tara Strong) in exchange for reclaiming his life on the timeline. He still hasn’t been able to shake the feeling of being a movie star and will do anything to get a chance to feel that sense of glory again. Finally enlightened by the bigger picture, Dox tries her hardest to convince X-5 to stand by the TVA, she even calls him “Bradley” to acknowledge his preferred title. And though there is conflict in his eyes, X-5 stands by Ravonna and watches his TVA family die a gruesome box death.

Though their deaths aren’t shown on screen (we do hear a bit of a squish), it is rather heavy subject matter for the MCU and makes for quite an intense scene. All the rage felt towards Dox for her actions is suddenly expelled on X-5. As mentioned earlier, we may not have much context on their relationship, but the moment of the two embracing during the season premiere is just enough to make this scene hurt. Brad doesn’t want to see his friends die — but the allure of his life is just too potent to resist. X-5 knows the horrors of the smush-cube considering he spent some time there himself, but instead of even trying to reach a truce with Ravonna, he simply watches in silence as his entire family is crushed in front of him.

Dox and X-5 are both complex characters, which is what makes them such a great pair. They have a similar confused sense of morality that ultimately leads them down different paths. Dox took no issue committing mass genocide to protect everyone at the TVA, while X-5 is willing to watch his TVA cohorts die in order to save himself and his place on the timeline. It’s easy to view Dox’s actions pruning branched timelines as selfish, and maybe that’s part of it, but she believed it was the right thing to do for her community. X-5’s motives, on the other hand, may cause fewer casualties but come from a darker place fueled by ego and self-absorption. Neither of them is necessarily in the right, but somehow we feel more sympathy for the timeline-killing general than the washed-up soldier trying to reclaim his sense of freedom. Even if X-5 wasn’t a selfish person beforehand, he was irreparably tainted by his time as Brad. Let’s just hope the same thing doesn’t happen to Mobius when he inevitably learns about his life on the Sacred Timeline.

‘Loki’ Season 2 and the Jonathan Majors Crossroads – IndieWire – Armessa Movie News

How important is Jonathan Majors in “Loki” Season 2?

Allow me to invoke the same energy as a popular meme of Beanie Feldstein from “Ladybird” — he’s not the titular role, but he’s the ultimate villain. Majors made his MCU debut in the “Loki” Season 1 finale as “He Who Remains” — a man at the end of time, and a foe so formidable that Loki himself (Tom Hiddleston) is visibly terrified by his memory.

Officially unmasked as Kang the Conqueror in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” Majors quickly became the centerpiece of Marvel‘s Phase 5 — a series of films and shows culminating in “Avengers: Kang Dynasty” (the actual titular role!) in 2026. Through his performance, the actor proved to be a villain as magnetic and menacing as the best of them and a worthy torchbearer for Marvel’s future.

All of that is in freefall since Majors was arrested after assault allegations from ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. Police made the arrest in New York and found injuries on Jabbari’s head and neck (Majors has denied all allegations). A Rolling Stone investigation revealed reports of Majors behaving abusively on set and with partners for as long as a decade. The latest documents obtained by Variety offer further details about the March 25 incident as well as references to Jabbari’s medical care and a police report from 2022. Jabbari was arrested on October 25, but the Manhattan district attorney’s office said it “would decline to prosecute any charges brought by the NYPD against Ms. Jabbari related to the belated allegations made by defendant [Majors] regarding the incident on March 25, 2023.” Jabbari was released, and the case is scheduled go to trial on November 29.

IndieWire last checked in with “Loki” on October 5, the week of the premiere episode which Majors was actually not in at all. His character — a Kang variant known in his timeline as Victor Timely, was introduced in Episode 3 and died a violent death in Episode 4. In fact, all the characters might be dead after the October 27 cliffhanger, but are all equally likely to return as new variants in new timelines — Kang included — with a new episode on November 2. Season 3 is not confirmed, but “Loki” is Marvel’s most successful series starring the rare character who has now stayed in the MCU for over a decade.

The week of the premiere, “Loki” executive producer Kevin Wright explicitly told Variety that there were no plans to recut the series or recast Majors, but those decisions will have to be revisited depending on the trial results — and perhaps adjusted as the story develops. Marvel execs are paying attention as much as anyone, no doubt planning multiple contingencies depending on how the trial goes.

So how do Marvel Studios and Disney respond to what is at the very least a significant blot on a prized brand? Recasting Majors should not be unthinkable under the circumstances, even if he already shot scenes for other projects — there’s ample precedent, for better or worse. Warner Bros. made the call with Johnny Depp in “Fantastic Beasts” (replaced by Mads Mikkelsen), but also stood firm when it came to keeping Ezra Miller on in and as “The Flash.” Notably, neither franchise is thriving; critical and commercial performance for “The Secrets of Dumbledore” effectively concluded the Wizarding World series, while a “Flash” sequel is planned in theory but won’t go into production for years — if at all.

Marvel has always had a strong fan base and consistently better quality than the aforementioned properties — but the subset of viewers who consider it to be event entertainment is dwindling. Searches for Majors on social media yield results mainly about the allegations and trial, and mentions of “Loki” rarely separate his performance from the news cycle. As with the case of Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard, there is a mix of fervent public sentiment that takes sides and chooses its hero, as well as a steady stream of misinformation, lack of updates, and exhaustion at another Hollywood figure whose reputation — and criminal record — is in flux.

Given that “Loki” Season 3 hasn’t been ordered, at this point, if there is a guilty verdict, it seems like the most likely scenario is that “Loki” will be canceled. Which will still leave what to do about Majors an issue for the films to address, either by recasting, keeping him in it (only possible if the allegations don’t hold), or reassessing Kang’s importance in Phase 5 — which would involve restructuring multiple films and series.

With a trial about to begin, Disney’s official decision will likely arrive right on the heels of a verdict. Depending on the results, the company might breathe a sigh of relief and continue betting on Majors (many of his fans remain loyal even as the case develops), with the option to minimize his role in future projects. Even if the charges are dismissed, Disney could still recast or move in a new direction — and certainly if the allegations are proven true. And while fan sentiment can’t quite be measured on social media these days, fans are certainly watching, whatever comes next.

As we head toward the finale of Season 2, Loki delivers some startling discoveries and the entire TVA is on the brink of total destruction in Episode 4, “Heart of the TVA.” Directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead and written by Eric Martin and Katharyn Blair, Episode 4 reveals the truth of Ravonna’s (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) past, brings the whole cast back to the TVA, and the characters finally have some difficult conversations that have been brewing since the beginning of the season.

Particularly, we see the in-person conversation that Ravonna and He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) have right after they take over the TVA and we learn that although Renslayer was working with He Who Remains, he betrayed her and rather than have her rule alongside him, he wiped her memory completely. Another scene we return to is from the first episode when Loki (Tom Hiddleston) jumps into the future and sees Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) in the TVA right before he is pruned and saved from his time-slipping dilemma. This is the moment that galvanizes Loki into seeking out Sylvie, and now we know that the whole reason Sylvie is even at the TVA is because Loki went to go seek her out. It’s… kind of a confusing time paradox. The episode is jam-packed full of these big moments, making it one of the most eventful installments of Season 2. Ultimately, it ends with complete destruction and uncertainty.

‘Loki’ Season 2 Episode 4 Makes Us Very Suspicious About O.B.’s Real Identity

While O.B. (Ke Huy Quan) has been a delightful new addition to Season 2, Episode 4 finally pairs him up with Victor Timely (Majors). Bringing Timely back to the TVA, Loki and Mobius (Owen Wilson) take him to O.B. to see if Victor’s temporal aura can solve the Temporal Loom problem. In a “chicken and the egg” moment, the two characters are starstruck by each other. Victor has spent his life idolizing O.B., who wrote the TVA manual, and O.B. has been inspired by the historical figure of Victor Timely, who he says would have been bigger than Einstein if he’d had the resources. While it’s a delight to see the two actors playing off each other in the scene, it also brings to mind a question that I’ve had for a while: just how involved is O.B. in everything happening at the TVA?

If O.B. inspired Victor, who inspired O.B. in return, is there a possibility that O.B. could himself be a Kang variant? I know that that’s an insane thing to say, but we already know from the show that variants can look and act very different from each other. Loki is a prime example of this. Not only does Sylvie exist, but all the Loki variants are proof that a variant doesn’t have to look identical (or even be the same species, looking at you Alligator Loki). With so much knowledge of the TVA and an unwiped memory, is it possible that O.B. is merely another Kang variant in waiting? We already know that He Who Remains wiped everyone’s memories after winning the Time War, including Ravonna’s, and that people are being subjected to regular mindwipes. O.B.’s friendly attitude and non-threatening persona (thanks in part to Ke Huy Quan’s performance) could easily be a misdirect.

‘Loki’ Season 2 Episode 4 Asks, “Is It OK to Play God?”

In a heartfelt conversation at the Automat, Loki and Sylvie finally start to chip away at the complicated points of view they have on what to do with the TVA. It’s one of the most compelling scenes that looks closely at Loki’s development as a character and addresses one of the core issues that Season 1 ended on. Is it better to control the chaos and play god if it means saving lives? Or is it better to let chaos reign and take the good along with the bad? It’s a philosophical question with no real right answer.

In the scene, Loki reminisces about the events of the first Thor movie. He says that he once viewed softness as a weakness, a sentiment that Sylvie echoes, telling him, “Soft gets you killed.” But Loki quickly points out that in sparing Victor’s life, they are able to save and spare more lives. Sylvie’s mercy — softness — is instrumental in saving the timeline. Wwhile Sylvie is eager to just burn everything down and start from scratch, Loki correctly points out that trying to fix what is already broken is hard, but it’s also necessary.

It’s a discussion that makes sense from both sides of the table. Sylvie, who has been endlessly hunted and pursued by the TVA, obviously only sees the bad, like Dox (Kate Dickie) pruning all the timelines. Loki, who has been working alongside Mobius and B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku), has seen the capacity for good that the people at the TVA have. They’re victims of the TVA themselves, having been plucked out of time with their memories completely wiped to become employees. At the end of the day, it seems that both Sylvie and Loki might still end up doing what He Who Remains wanted them to do all along: play god. Their diametric difference is a strength that they have and can help them look after the branches of the timeline so that they can keep order. As Loki says, you can’t just give people free will and walk away. They have to be protected.

What Happens in ‘Loki’ Season 2 Episode 4?

Ravonna Renslayer and Miss Minutes (Tara Strong) have been convenient allies, but after being kicked through a time door to the End of Time, Miss Minutes reveals the truth about Ravonna’s past to her. Showing her the events of centuries (or even millennia) past, Ravonna sees herself speaking to He Who Remains and learns that although she held a position of power in the TVA before as a judge, she was meant to be one of its leaders. She was not just an important figure in the war, she was the commander of He Who Remains’ armies. In fact, the phrase, “For All Time, Always,” comes directly from her conversation with He Who Remains. But, after winning the war, He Who Remains went on to wipe the memories of everyone who helped him, including Ravonna, robbing her of the power to rule beside him. Realizing that He Who Remains has used them both, the two partner up to go after the TVA.

Meanwhile, at the TVA, Victor arrives and is immediately brought to O.B. in R&A. The two have their fanboy moment, each surprised to meet the man who has had such an impact on their creations. There’s some technical jargon being thrown around about the Temporal Loom, but basically, it needs to be fixed and Victor just happens to have the device that will help them succeed before the TVA implodes. Unfortunately, the radiation out near the Loom is now much worse than when Mobius went out there before. Remember the skin melting? Yeah, that almost seems like a guarantee. And what’s life without skin?

While O.B. and Timely try to figure out a solution, Mobius casually suggests that they go get some pie, which makes Sylvie explode in anger at his flippancy. She points out, much like X-5 (Rafael Casal), that he hasn’t even looked into his own life or timeline. He doesn’t have a connection to the branched timelines out there, and he seems to actively be evading it. Mobius’ past and his origins is something that has had us scratching our heads since the very beginning and with all the emphasis being placed on it in the last few episodes, it seems that we will be getting our answer very soon.

Sylvie ends up at the Automat, which marks the second time that people seem to inexplicably end up there, which is one time too many not to make me suspicious. There, she and Loki have a discussion about how to handle the TVA, and as I stated before, it’s a discussion where there doesn’t seem to be a right or wrong. On one hand, it does seem like burning it all down and starting over might just be what they need to do. There are so many loose threads and the system is so corrupted. But on the other hand, preserving what has been set in place could provide longer and more stable change as opposed to completely razing everything. Sylvie seems reluctant to lead the TVA in any capacity, and in many ways, she is truly chaos embodied, and when she points out that she doesn’t want to play god, Loki reminds her, “We are gods.”

In the TVA, Gamble (Liz Carr) convinces B-15 to talk to Dox and her men and try to change her opinion. Gamble reveals that it was B-15’s impassioned speech that changed her mind on how to deal with the timelines, and she can inspire Dox in the same way. Speaking to Dox, B-15 does her best to try and appeal to Dox and convince them to fight for them again, especially with Renslayer on the way. But Dox doesn’t get to take B-15 up on her offer, because when Ravonna arrives she tries to bring Dox and her men onto her side to fight for her. Dox correctly recognizes that Ravonna is only after power and refuses to stand with her.

All of her men stand behind her except X-5, who sides with Ravonna. We know that he wants to return to his life on the timeline. It’s also clear that he and Dox have a closer relationship than they let on. She calls him Bradley and asks him if life on the timeline was really that good. He isn’t able to answer her and instead cowers when Ravonna puts all the people into a time cube and crushes them to death with Miss Minutes watching on with a slightly concerning, joyful smile on her face.

The three of them then go after Victor, who they grab after X-5 prunes D-90 (Neil Ellice). Then, Miss Minutes takes control of the system, stopping the other team’s efforts to fix the TVA. It’s in this scene where Sylvie becomes trapped in the elevator, and as she pries open the doors she sees the Loki of the past (from Episode 1) right before Loki from Episode 4 prunes him and sends him back to his point in the timeline. The ringing phone from Episode 1 is revealed to be a call from O.B., who tells Loki and Sylvie that the only way to take Miss Minutes offline is to reboot the system — which means they lose the safety system, which means Loki and Sylvie will get to use their magic. Finally!

With the system down, Loki and Sylvie act quickly to get Victor back. Sylvie enchants X-5 and gets him to prune Ravonna. They grab Victor and run back to the Loom as it is on the brink of destruction. Scanning his temporal aura, the blast doors finally open, and Victor decides to be the one to launch his multiplier MacGuffin into the Loom. He puts on the suit that Mobius donned in Episode 1 and tells himself, “Time to be brave.” It’s a huge heroic moment that is instantly undercut when he steps out of the doors onto the platform and is turned into spaghetti by the radiation. With their last hope gone, Loki and the team simply have to watch as the Loom totally destabilizes and implodes.

It’s a wild way to end an episode with just two weeks left to wrap everything up. Will we ever find out the truth about Mobius’ past? Are we ever going to learn about O.B.’s origins? Will we see Ravonna again? Will we see Victor again? Everything seems uncertain as Loki takes a late pivot in the season and throws us back into the unknown with this twist ending. Time will tell if their gamble will pay off.
