Nathan Fielder Casts a Spell — First Reactions – IndieWire – Armessa Movie News

It’s not often prestigious organizations invite damnation, misfortune, or any kind of bad luck onto themselves — let alone their renowned festival and its thousands of guests — but for Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, exceptions will be made.

“The Curse” held its world premiere at the New York Film Festival Thursday night, with both co-creators in attendance for the first TV series to ever premiere at NYFF. Fielder, Safdie, and Emma Stone (who did not attend) executive produce and co-star in Showtime‘s upcoming black comedy — about a trio of creatives behind an aspiring HGTV home-renovation series — which had audiences laughing and gasping throughout the three-hour screening.

Dennis Lim, the festival’s artistic director, did warn the crowd (as best he could) during his opening remarks.

“[‘The Curse‘] is as brilliant, wild, perverse, hilarious, uncomfortable, and anxiety-inducing as you’d expect,” he said, alluding to Fielder (“The Rehearsal,” “Nathan For You”) and Safdie’s (“Uncut Gems,” “Good Time”) previous works.

Indeed, the initial three episodes of “The Curse” feature loads of cringe comedy, as expected from two of the genre’s great artists, while also fleshing out a dramatic marriage story and complex, often intense, individual arcs. Asher (Fielder) and Whitney (Stone) are approaching their one-year wedding anniversary and already making big plans. The camera-friendly couple wants to bring sustainable living to small-town New Mexico, and they aim to star in their own HGTV show while doing it. Between Whitney’s eco-friendly designs and Asher’s steady accrual of local properties, there’s plenty of goodwill and potential built into their pitch.

But an interview with a local news crew quickly pokes holes in their practical plans (and self-touted benevolence) and things only continue unraveling from there, as Asher and Whitney struggle to adhere to the TV-friendly image their family’s dreams demand. With Safdie playing a blatantly unprincipled producer — secretly recording conversations, staging scenes, and even provoking his colleagues to stir up onscreen drama — the series takes an uncensored look at the damage caused by people inserting themselves where they don’t belong, for reasons good, well-intentioned, and blatantly wrong.

Lim said Safdie wrote to him in May 2023, asking for NYFF to consider “The Curse” for the festival.

“I said, ‘Well, we don’t actually have a section for television at the New York Film Festival,’” Lim said. “He was like, ‘Well, why don’t you take a look and see what you think?’ He sent me three episodes. I watched them right away and said I needed to see more. By the time I got to Episode 5 or 6, I called Benny and said, ‘We need to figure out how to make this work.’”

Lim said he and Safdie discussed a number of ideas for the premiere, including “an all-night marathon” of the entire 10-episode first season.

“This was one of the most exciting things I’ve seen this year,” Lim said. “Everything about ‘The Curse’ screams cinema to me. Many people won’t watch it in that way, but given how this is written, acted, directed, edited, scored, I think it needs to be seen on the big screen and as a collective, communal experience. So it was really important for us to try to make this happen, and I’m very pleased that we could.”

For those who share Lim’s viewing preference, Film at Lincoln Center will host screenings of “The Curse” throughout the first season. Presented “in two-episode blocks” and held at the Walter Reade Theater, Lim announced weekly screenings will take place before the episodes premiere each Sunday on Showtime.

“The Curse” will be released Friday, November 10 on Paramount+ with Showtime before making its on-air debut Sunday, November 12 at 10 p.m. ET on Showtime. Until then, here are some early reactions from its NYFF premiere. (Formal reviews are embargoed until a later date.)

Exorcist Believer’s [Spoiler] Cameo Sparks Emotional Fan Reactions – Armessa Movie News

Warning: The article contains MAJOR spoilers for The Exorcist: Believer!

  • Linda Blair’s surprise cameo in The Exorcist: Believer has sparked emotional reactions and even earned a standing ovation from viewers.
  • Many Exorcist fans see Blair’s return as a show of respect to the franchise, as she portrayed the original possessed girl in the first movie.
  • Despite poor reviews, viewers still enjoyed Blair’s cameo and expressed excitement over seeing her reprise the role of Regan after 46 years.

One surprise cameo in The Exorcist: Believer is sparking emotional reactions, even earning a standing ovation in some theaters. The Exorcist: Believer premiered in theaters on October 6, reviving the franchise after an 18-year hiatus. While the horror movie is the sixth installment in the franchise, it is a direct sequel to the 1973 original film. It follows the demonic possession of two young girls, which spurns their parents to seek the help of Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn). Although the latest entry has received poor critical reception, one aspect is getting high praise.

The Exorcist: Believer viewers took to social media to share their reactions to Linda Blair’s surprise cameo.

Many saw her long-awaited return as a show of respect to the franchise.

One viewer even noted that the cameo sparked a standing ovation within the theater.

Others noted that Blair’s cameo was one of the few things that stood out to them in the movie.

Many of these users shared the same disappointed perspective as critics of The Exorcist: Believer, but that didn’t stop them from enjoying the cameo.

Some even “geeked out” over the cameo.

Others found Blair to be “fabulous” in the latest sequel.

Ultimately, whether viewers thought The Exorcist: Believer was a good film or not, they still shared the excitement of Blair’s return.

Linda Blair’s The Exorcist: Believer Cameo Explained

Blair’s cameo sparked a strong reaction because the franchise originated with her. In The Exorcist, she portrayed the original possessed girl Regan MacNeil, contributing much to what is considered one of the scariest horror movies of all time. While Blair returned for the first sequel, Exorcist II: The Heretic, she hasn’t reprised the role of Regan since 1977. Hence, appearing in The Exorcist: Believer as Regan after 46 years is quite impressive.

RELATED: Does The Exorcist: Believer Have A Post-Credits Scene?

Before the movie’s release, it was revealed that Blair had been on the set of The Exorcist: Believer, but only to serve as an advisor. Director David Gordon Greene explained they wanted her advice to make filming safer for the young actors on set. Though her presence on set sparked rumors of a cameo, the crew did a fairly good job keeping it under wraps. To add to the surprise, the cameo doesn’t occur until The Exorcist: Believer‘s ending. It’s also revealed that Regan wasn’t in contact with Chris to explain her absence.

At the very end, though, Regan surprises her mother by showing up at the hospital where Chris is recovering from injuries sustained during the exorcisms. When she hears the door to her room open, she expects it to be Victor (Leslie Odom Jr.), the father of one of the girls. Instead, it’s Regan, and viewers very briefly see the mother and daughter together in an emotional reunion. Even though The Exorcist: Believer may not have done everything right, it did deliver the decades-long reunion between Regan and Chris.

‘Loki’ Season 2 First Reactions Hail It as a Return to Form for the MCU – Armessa Movie News

The Big Picture

  • The early response to the second season of Loki is overwhelmingly positive, with critics and viewers praising it as excellent and a return to form.
  • Ke Huy Quan’s performance in the series is being singled out for praise, with many calling it standout and exceptional.
  • However, there are some critics and viewers who find the story of the second season to have less direction and are less excited about the upcoming Avengers film as a result.

It seems, maybe, our savior has arrived? The initial responses to the eagerly awaited second season of Loki have arrived, and it appears that Marvel enthusiasts are in for another delightful experience. Those who were fortunate enough to get an early glimpse of Loki season two have taken to social media to share their thoughts, describing the Disney+ series’ comeback as excellent and a return to form, with plenty of praise going to the core cast of Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Sophia DiMartino and newcomer Ke Huy Quan.

In the second season of Loki, the story unfolds following the jaw-dropping season finale. Loki now finds himself embroiled in a fierce struggle for the very essence of the Time Variance Authority. Teaming up with Mobius, Hunter B-15, and an array of both familiar and fresh faces, Loki embarks on a perilous journey through a continuously expanding and more treacherous multiverse. His mission is to locate Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes, and uncover the profound meaning behind the concepts of free will and one’s grand purpose

Collider’s Steve Weintraub was one of the first to see the first four episodes of the new season, describing them as “excellent” and praising Ke’s addition to the cast.

The Hollywood Handle also praised the importance of Ke Huy Quan’s casting in the series, while Box Office Mexico also took to singling out Jonathan Majors, whose Kang the Conqueror is a looming shadow throughout.

Other reactions label the series as frenetic and intense, incredible inventive and creative, and Marvel’s best television series.

A Universe Without Acclaim

It wasn’t all universal praise, however. There are some criticisms to be found among all the positivity, however, with some critics and viewers taking issue with a story that had “less direction” than before, and claiming it had left them less excited about the upcoming Avengers film as a result.

The second season of Loki is scheduled to debut on Disney+ on October 5, 2023, as part of Phase Five of the MCU.

Early Barbie Reactions Claim Greta Gerwig’s Movie Lives Up To The Hype – Armessa Movie News

The first social media reactions to the Barbie movie are taking the Internet by storm. The comedy, which was directed by Greta Gerwig from a script she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach, is set to arrive in theaters on July 21. It stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken and follows the pair as they travel into the real world after Barbie is exiled for malfunctioning and failing to behave in the perfect manner expected in Barbie Land.

The first reactions to the movie have been shared on social media, fewer than two weeks before the official Barbie release date. Critics and cultural pundits are dropping their brief, spoiler-free thoughts all over social media after the movie’s pink carpet premiere.

Their reviews largely contain effusive praise, including this post from ty, who calls the movie “a classic” and says “I was cackling at Gosling’s himbo Ken.”

Not everyone is one hundred percent sold on the movie, however, as Perri Nemiroff – while praising the craftsmanship of the movie – points out that certain characters “needed more screen time to really dig into and explore to the fullest.” Check out a gallery of other reactions below, largely praising the movie and especially Ryan Gosling’s performance as Ken:

Barbie Could Become One Of The Biggest Movies Of 2023

With this early praise, Barbie‘s success could already be snowballing. The buzzy movie has launched many memes at this point, including quite a few jokes about it sharing a release date with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. When the full reviews drop, it’s seeming like Barbie will debut on Rotten Tomatoes with a very strong score.

The Barbie box office is currently projected to win big. Its opening weekend has been estimated between $70 million and $80 million. If these early reactions help add to the current hype, it could potentially grow even bigger.

If Barbie grosses even slightly over those projections, it will enter the worldwide Top 20 for 2023 by the end of its first three days in theaters. There is no telling how high it could climb during its entire run. However the cards fall, its prospects are looking rosy.

This year’s BET Awards ceremony took place in Los Angeles on Sunday (June 25) at the Microsoft Theater and had an especially powerful moment where Skillz honored the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop in his standard “rap-up” fashion.

Other highlights included Busta Rhymes being honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award along with a show-stopping performance that saw him sharing the stage with Swizz Beatz, Rah Digga, and more.

With it being the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop, the art form enjoyed a number of performances from veterans showing expert poise even after decades in the game. That moment was shared with some of Hip-Hop’s rising stars as well, including Trick Daddy and Trina, Master P, Jeezy, and more.

During a tribute to the late, great Tina Turner, Patti LaBelle sang Turner’s “The Best” but experienced some technical difficulties yet still powered through. Ice Spice ran through a performance and Lil Uzi Vert, who allegedly got into trouble over the “Munch” star, opened the show with a shoutout heard around the world and in the seats.

Coi Leray also showcased a high-energy set and rocked an outfit featuring the name of fellow women rappers in a nice showing of unity within that segment of the genre.

Fan photos and reactions from Elton John’s Glastonbury set – Armessa Music News

Fans showed up early today (June 25) for Elton John‘s headline Glastonbury set, forming a massive crowd around the Pyramid Stage.

Many of the revellers making up the Sunday night audience wore costumes, glasses and sequins in honour of the legendary performer. See photos and social media posts of the avid fans below.

The gesture didn’t go unnoticed by John, who towards the end of his set decided to thank the audience.

“I want to thank you all for showing up in your costumes and your glasses and your outfits,” he said. “You make me feel so happy, make me feel loved. I want to thank you also for 52 years of amazing love and loyalty you’ve shown me. It’s been an incredible journey and I’ve had the best, best time. I will never forget you, you’re in my head and my heart and my soul.”

Elton’s star-studded Pyramid Stage performance was rumoured to include four guest stars, which appeared throughout the night. For a rendition of ‘Tiny Dancer’, John brought out The Killers’ Brandon Flowers. “My next guest, I first met in 2005 when I started playing Las Vegas,” he said of the frontman. “He came round to my hotel suite to play me his band’s first album, which was called ‘Hot Fuss’.”

Other guests during the star-studded show included Rina Sawayama, who joined John for a rendition of ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’ – the song previously duetted on with Kiki Dee. Before that, Gabriels‘ frontman Jacob Lusk joined John on stage with the pair performing ‘Are You Ready For Love?’ for the first time in years alongside the London Community Gospel Choir.

During the introduction for that John fondly recalled Fatboy Slim “regurgitating” the ’70s song to turn it into an early ’00s Number One hit in the UK.

Elsewhere on Sunday at Glastonbury 2023, during his Legends’ Slot performance, Yusuf/Cat Stevens paid tribute to George Harrison with a cover of The Beatles‘ ‘Here Comes The Sun’.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor also opened the famed Pyramid Stage but fans aren’t happy that the set wasn’t live-streamed.

Japanese Breakfast also had to cancel her 12:30pm set at The Other Stage over travel delays. She was replaced by Eaves Wilder. Tonight, the Pyramid Stage will be headlined by Elton John, who will be playing his final show in the UK.

Just before John came on stage, Lil Nas X performed what fans described as an “incredible” slot on the Pyramid Stage.

Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ First Reactions – IndieWire – Armessa Movie News

You’ve all seen Tom Cruise drive a motorcycle off a cliff in the first trailer, and the second, for ‘Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.’ Now, the first reactions from critics are here and they are strong, if not quite as strong as they were for “Mission: Impossible — Fallout,” the beloved most recent installment from 2018. But they are mostly shouting their praise as if they were Cruise himself yelling (rightly) on set about the importance of Covid safety.

IndieWire’s own Executive Editor of Film, Kate Erbland, said it did the “best job yet of recent ‘part 1 of 2!!’ features in feeling like its own film while setting up for the next half.” That alone is worthy of praise because many of these films have struggled with this, ever since “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1” inaugurated the form in 2011.

This appears to be a slightly more plot-oriented “Mission: Impossible” film, but the action scenes within, though fewer in number than the past, are massive. “Huge variety of action and a final set piece that ranks 2-3 all-time for the franchise,” said Germain Lussier, while noting “it gets a little dense at times.”

Uproxx’s Mike Ryan shared a little bit of its plot, that apparently “Dead Reckoning” is an “ambitious examination of/meditation on AI and the dangerous path we might be on.” He noted, however, that it’s “not as satisfying as FALLOUT.”

Fandango’s Erik Davis also praised how it feels like a standalone film: “I had the absolute best time watching #MissionImpossible… it both felt complete and left you dying for what comes next.”

People’s Nigel Smith might be the most enthusiastic of all: “It reinvigorated my love for the summer blockbuster.”

The War of the Rohirrim’ Early Reactions Are Out- Armessa Movie News

Image via New Line Cinema

The War of the Rohirrim is a feature set in Peter Jackson’s live-action Lord of the Rings universe, and according to the early reactions by folks on social media, the return of Eowyn and the riders of Rohan in this anime movie is a spectacle for the most diehard of fans and the most ardent of gatekeepers.

Tolkien fans have had a tough year contending with Amazon’s The Rings of Power series and all the things it gets wrong about Middle-earth, but there may be light at the end of the tunnel, after all. (Or as Samwise Gamgee would say, “But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.”)

During the recent Annecy Animated Film Festival, The War of the Rohirrim was showcased to a room full of fans and reporters, and the early impressions seem to be very positive.

But first off, let’s quickly recap everything we learned about the movie. The War of the Rohirrim takes place almost 200 years before the events of the trilogy and depicts the tale of Helm Hammerhand. Miranda Otto’s Eowyn is indeed in the story as the main narrator, but the main heroine is actually going to be Hammerhand’s daughter, Hera. When asked why she is the one to spearhead the adaptation, the producers replied: “Everyone else dies!” So we’re definitely in for a tragic story hearkening back to old Germanic folklore.

What’s more, the pic is going to revisit many places from Peter Jackson’s cinematic trilogy, with the producers doing everything in their power to remain true to Tolkien’s canon. And anime apparently never looked this good.

The film is already making its way to people’s most anticipated things to look out for in 2024.

The War of the Rohirrim is in good hands. Tear-jerkingly good.

The War of the Rohirrim is being compared to Castlevania, which is honestly a high bar if you’ve watched that anime series.

Some aren’t convinced, but they’re remaining cautiously optimistic thanks to the high production value.

Will The War of the Rohirrim redeem Middle-earth in cinema, if not live-action? I guess we’ll get to answer that question for ourselves come April 12, 2024.
