This story made me sick to my stomach, how careless indeed money makes people.

When they said the price of filling a gas tank was $1.20, I almost fell down. I wish we could have that price of gasoline today! 😂

Anyway, this was a great movie, with brilliant acting and definitely classy. Love the elegance and classism of the wardrobes, jewelry, of those times and the scenery in general. It was an era where people dressed nicely and elegantly and had class.

And Robert Redford was, as always, a first-class actor besides being a very talented and handsome man; the whole cast was excellent and exceptional. I have seen this movie so many times and never get tired or bored. The script was excellent and the acting terrific.

And what I liked about this movie was that there were not swearing words, no violence, no drugs, no serial killer crimes ……just a lovely and exquisite film the type of films I love to watch the most. Just love it. ♥️

Time to read the book again! Although this film does a superb job of expressing what Fitzgerald was expressing. Particularly regarding the insensitivity, egomania, shallow values and mega-materialism of immoral Richie Americans.

I think the acting was deliberately supposed to be like that of a dramatic play. When you think of how great each of these actors are/were in other films one can see that this was a certain style of acting based on the director's word. Cinematography, music, costumes, lighting, dancers, set… all superb in my opinion. It also shows the elitist attitudes of the money mongers of the time. The excess and opulence and then the have-nots on the other side of town.

I can't belive how bad a movie this is or how bad a book it is.

The Mad Magazine title for their satire of this, "The Great Gasbag", really says it all.

Love this movie but it reminds me of the present how everyone covers thier asses and just keeps on moving ahead. The Elites.

One of the best social commentaries in American fiction. And to my mind the movie does the book justice. Mia Farrow was superlative.

huge budget. great cast. a block buster of '74. very slow paced and boring. it flopped at the box office. mid 70's hollywood. everyone went to see chinatown w/nicholson or the exorcist .. not this overblown yawner.

The only thing that ever stuck with me about The Great Gatsby is I recall them sitting around smoking and drinking and being bored and one of or their only idea was to go into the city to smoke and drink.

what a stupid movie and stupid plot. Fitzgerald was a rotten socialist and you can see in this particular book that he is anti-rich anti-capitalism, talk about black and white, when in reality are the fucking democRAts are party of slavery, eugenics, anti-Semitism and everything else in between. They talk about the great society and fucking replacement theory. And Fitzgerlad should stay with philosophy of human mind and the deeds like he did in the Curious Case of Benjamin Button

A lot of the story ….which would be from Fitzgerald's text, is narrated by Waterston. Before his fairly recent illness which has affected his speech patterns, I would have loved to have heard him narrate practically anything. He has, in fact, done a fair number of audiobooks.

One of the best movies ever made.

Despite some poorly written dialogue and a couple of miscast roles, of all the film versions of The Great Gatsby this still remains the gold standard.

I think Daisy was miscast; otherwise, great movie. Excellent book…

moral of the story: rich people by their very NATURE are corrupt people. ooops – they become NUMB to the needs of others & only look out for themselves

Think I need to read the book now. Robert Redford, what a dream. Love Sam Waterston as Nic. Doubt I would even look at the 2013 version.

I agree about Paul Newman and Robert Redford
Were they were considered very good
Looking handsome, sexy men and in keeping with this what I believe makes them stand out above the rest is their deep complex demeanor their heart sound discerning minds and souls from which they had clear intent to give back ….Paul with the hole in the wall hospitals which assisted parents to be able to give quality time for children with cancer .And then Robert Redford actor apprenticeship for new and up coming artist the Sundance Institute…both noble causes that gives the thought what makes a man sexy well this is an added element and if you will eleganceis what makes a man sexy, desireable and respected henceforth MEMORABLE!

There is no better Version of the great gatsby than this one. And I have seen them all!!! The prose and the quietness Gave this movie the tone. That gave it a special element without all that Noise
, the new sensationalism in the new versions, Which take away from an engaging story line And it's awful maybe effective to try to get the attention of a new generation. However this attempt seems to presume that the newer generation does not seem to have the attention span the movie subject matter it requires to enjoy But I believe it's a mistake because you cannot get any better than the 1974.
