I fell asleep watching a beer video, then woke up watching this. How interesting.

The majority of people don't know how good Scotch Whisky tastes. That's a good thing for us who drink regularly.

I’d like to hear more about the fibers used in this process. Bergazo? Furgzao? You damn Long Islanders!!! Would yaz pronounce all your consonants and vowels. Fuhgeddaboudit!😂😂😂

He threw Jim's recipe for Black Art in the trash? He didn't have to use it, but he damned well should have treated something that precious with a bit more reverence than that. I would have at least framed it and hung it in a prominent place in my office. That was both insulting and infuriating.

Is that Mike Mills from REM right at the beginning?

Nice this advertisement has no ads! Oh wait, it does. Fascinating how they show all these different distilleries at the beginning of the video and the at end, and include Ralphy and others talking about whisky, but then show an hour long advertisement for Bruichladdich, my least favorite distillery on Islay.

I remember reading the article in the New Yorker by Kelefa Sanneh featuring this same romantic story by the lads that were determined to buy Bruichladdich (so they could then flip it for a huge profit by selling it the mega corporation Remy, but that was mentioned in the article or in this commercial.)

The article caused me to purchase The Laddie for my scotch club, along with one of the limited editions available at that time. The 8 Men of Malt were unimpressed but it seemed to me that the plot of the planted article worked. If even small portion of New Yorker readers bought a bottle of Bruichladdich it would mean several hundred Pounds in sales. I was utterly unimpressed with the whisky however.

To be fair, I have one of those noses that detects the sour milky/cheesy feint known in scotch tasting as "baby puke." During that original tasting four of us could smell it. The other four could not and accused us of trying to pull one over them. But baby puke it was. The same sensory phenomena exists for sulfur, chlorine, and a few others feints and off notes. Some people do not nose them at all in whisky, others detect them a bit, and others yet find them overwhelming to the point of a complete turn-off. I'm that way with baby puke.

I have been offered various Bruichladdich since that tasting, and have yet to ever want to buy a bottle as a result. I'll stick to Caol Ila, Kilchoman, Bunnhabhain, Ardbeg, Lagavulin, and Bowmore (indie bottlings only,) thank you very much.

Nice production values on this Bruichladdich commercial, however. 🙂

That was an excellent documentary. Highly recommend this to anyone who loves scotch whisky as much as I do. It’s hard to believe that single malts were not the norm until the early 80’s. Great to see and hear from all of these Scotch legends including Ralfy!

I have a bottle of single malt The Balvenie Peat Week Peated Whisky 14 yo bottled in 2003. It was bottled in August of 2003 according to the brown outer container. It was given to me by a good friend. It is my favorite of all my whiskys and I will be sad when it is finally gone.

Great documentary. Started getting into Japanese whisky and American bourbon 10 years ago. About 7 years ago I started dabbling in scotch and fell down a rabbit hole. Such a beautiful form of art in a glass/bottle/cask, waiting years for the right time to show themselves to your palate and senses. It makes for a moment in life that you can remember and cherish. Beautiful. Slainte 🥃

Great documentary! Didn't know that the scotch industry was on it's knees in the 80's. Cut my teeth on Macallan 18 yo sherry cask in the early 90's. Quite the revelation. Partial to single malts scotches thereafter. Didn't care for Kentucky bourbons. Have had some decent 4 grain aged blends recently. Age statement scotches are now unobtanium.
