With The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom capturing the hearts of both longstanding Zelda fans and newcomers alike, it’s no surprise that some may be eagerly searching for games with a similar feel. This is no small task; the Breath of the Wild sequel is an incredibly unique experience that combines elements of RPGs, puzzle-solving, sandbox, and open-world games into one, majorly impressive package. Not many titles can tick off all of these boxes – but there are a few games like Tears of the Kingdom that can recreate certain aspects (or feelings) that players may have enjoyed.
In the meantime, TOTK keeps Link quite busy. It takes about 35-50 hours to beat the main story line, but players can easily rack up dozens of additional hours of playtime, as there’s plenty else for the Hero of Hyrule to do. Fun side quests, over 100 Shrines, and an even greater number of Koroks in Tears of the Kingdom ensure that there’s almost always something to do. Nonetheless, those who feel satisfied with their progress already – or those who want a small chance in pace – may find themselves on the lookout for games similar to TOTK.
10 Minecraft
When it comes to sandbox games, it doesn’t get much better than Minecraft. The Mojang title is a staple in the gaming sphere, as the simple block-based title offers a surprisingly wide range of gameplay possibilities. Players are free to play however they please – whether that be killing mobs in survival mode, creating immense, towering structures in creative mode, playing mini-games in multiplayer servers, or simply exploring the massive map and all of its biomes. For those who enjoy the creative freedom that Ultrahand offers in Tears of the Kingdom, Minecraft can expand on that feeling tenfold.
9 Horizon Forbidden West
Horizon Forbidden West doesn’t offer as much liberty with crafting, but it does feature an absolutely gorgeous fantasy world for players to explore. Just like in Tears of the Kingdom, the game’s protagonist Aloy has to face off against angry machines that threaten to tear the planet apart. Plus, there are even opportunities for sky exploration, especially in the recently released Burning Shores DLC for Horizon Forbidden West.
8 Skyward Sword HD
However, the king of sky exploration is The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, which is one of the best games like Tears of the Kingdom. Much of the title takes place in the sky, with Link exploring a collection of floating islands known as Skyloft.
The area is similar to the Sky Islands in TOTK, but traversing them can be even more exciting, since players can ride a giant bird-like creature called Loftwing. If fans enjoy the feeling of Pargliding in Tears of the Kingdom, they’ll find that the flight mechanics in Skyward Sword HD evoke a similar sense of tranquility and freedom.
7 Pokémon Scarlet & Violet
Zelda and Pokémon are both iconic Nintendo franchises, and even though they are different in many ways, some notable similarities can be drawn between Pokémon: Scarlet & Violet and TOTK. The newest Pokémon game isn’t the first to have tackled an open-world setting, but unlike its predecessor, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, S&V takes place within a singular, large map. Exploring the Paldea region freely and being able to talk to various characters, battle enemies, and collect plenty of Pokémon can sometimes feel like exploring a tamer version of Hyrule.
6 Genshin Impact
Genshin Impact was heavily inspired by BOTW, which by nature makes it one of the best games like Tears of the Kingdom. Although it incorporates gacha elements and a large cast of playable characters, many of Genshin Impact‘s core mechanics are almost identical to TOTK‘s. For example, players can use a glider to fly across the large, open-world map, and they’ll also need to keep track of a circular stamina meter while they’re running or climbing terrain. Even the setting is quite similar, with Genshin Impact‘s medieval land of Teyvat being strikingly similar to Zelda‘s fantastical Kingdom of Hyrule (both visually and thematically).
5 Elden Ring
On the other hand, TOTK learned a valuable lesson from Elden Ring, which speaks volumes about not only the FromSoftware title’s quality, but also of its likeness to the Zelda game. In Elden Ring, players will step into the shoes of the Tarnished, who must defeat several bosses and reach the Erdtree to become the Elden Lord. Along the way, they’re encouraged to explore the gorgeous Lands Between.
The open-world fantasy setting (which is heavily inspired by Irish folklore) is filled with all sorts of amazing loot, memorable characters, and no shortage of secrets to discover. As a Souls-like, Elden Ring‘s gameplay is far more unforgiving in every aspect – but as long as players are buckled up for the ride, they’ll find that it is just as enjoyable as it is challenging.
4 Sable
Sable is the best BOTW clone, which inherently makes it a great game for those that love Tears of the Kingdom. Just like the two latest Zelda titles, Sable whisks players away to a far-away fantasy land – this time being a highly stylized desert, somewhat similar to Gerudo. The narrative follows the eponymous protagonist’s journey as she leaves her home for the first time, partaking in a traditional coming-of-age ritual.
She’ll have the chance to explore numerous ruins, speak to the desert’s many unique inhabitants, and even collect Sable‘s version of Korok seeds, Chum Eggs. Plus, since the indie game doesn’t feature any enemies, it’s a great alternative for those who could go without combat.
3 Astroneer
While thematically the two titles are light years apart, Astroneer is one of the best games like Tears of the Kingdom. The colorful, open-world space exploration game places a heavy emphasis on engineering, allowing players to build just about anything they can think of, including (but not limited to) vehicles, machines, an intricate base, or even a functional spaceship. While players can certainly make some deadly Ultrahand creations in Tears of the Kingdom, Astroneer takes it to the next level with highly-advanced space technology that curious astronauts can use to explore planets, go spelunking in caves, reshape terrain, and more.
2 Immortals Fenyx Rising
Immortals Fenyx Rising is another great BOTW-like that should strike a chord with TOTK enjoyers – especially those with an appreciation for Greek mythology. The title features a massive open-world map that’s begging to be explored, and the core mechanics are almost indistinguishable from the Zelda games’, as the player is given a pair of wings to glide around with, a stamina meter to keep track of, and dozens of Shrine-esque Vaults that contain physics-based puzzles. For those who enjoy TOTK and BOTW gameplay more than anything else, Immortals Fenyx Rising is a perfect match.
1 Breath Of The Wild
However, the best game like Tears of the Kingdom is Breath of the Wild, its direct predecessor. In many ways, Tears of the Kingdom‘s gameplay has improved and expanded on BOTW‘s, which might make some players hesitant about taking a step back – but as 2017’s Game of the Year and one of Nintendo’s most influential titles, Breath of the Wild still holds up as an ovation-worthy dive into Link’s exciting life. Anyone wanting more Zelda should first and foremost consider Breath of the Wild, as it’s undoubtedly the best game like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
