With Zordon dead and every Power Rangers show in chronological order working as a standalone adventure, the franchise had the chance to expand its scope of characters.
Naturally, the best characters in every new Power Rangers series are usually Rangers, although some villains have had great arcs too. Power Rangers Cosmic Fury’s ending episode might have been the end of the saga’s current timeline, which makes every Power Rangers season before it even more nostalgic. Although Power Rangers has several great characters, some Rangers stand out from the rest.
10 Karone (Melody Perkins)
In Space Astronema, Lost Galaxy Pink.
From Power Rangers in Space’s villain to Power Rangers Lost Galaxy’s second Pink Ranger, Karone had one of the best character arcs in all of the franchise – if not the best. Karone was kidnapped and taken away from her family at a very young age and spent most of her life being brainwashed and trained by the forces of Dark Specter. Astronema believed she was alone in the world, and that evil was all she had left. Fortunately, with the help of her brother, Karone broke free of Dark Specter’s influence and was redeemed. She later replaced Kendrix as the Galaxy Pink Ranger in an emotional series of episodes.
9 Trent Fernandez-Mercer (Jeffrey Parazzo)
Dino Thunder White Ranger.
While Trent doesn’t have an enormous Power Rangers history, at least compared to other characters in the franchise, he made a strong impression in Power Rangers Dino Thunder. Power Rangers has had many evil and extra Rangers, but Dino Thunder’s White Ranger episodes are among the show’s best. Trent’s journey from the evil White Ranger to a member of the Dino Thunder Power Rangers mirrored Tommy Oliver’s “Green With Evil” story and successfully modernized one of the saga’s oldest tropes. The White Ranger would often steal the show in Dino Thunder, and Trent got to return for the Super Ninja Steel “Dimensions in Danger” episode.
8 Zayto (Russell Curry)
Dino Fury Red Ranger, Cosmic Fury Zenith Ranger, Morphin Master.
Zayto is one of the newest Power Rangers characters, having appeared for the first time in 2021’s Power Rangers Dino Fury. A knight from an alien planet who landed on Earth millions of years ago, Zayto mentored two new young heroes as the Red Ranger. Together, they formed the Dino Fury team, which would then be the Cosmic Fury Power Rangers. Zayto died in Dino Fury after sacrificing himself to save the world but was brought back by the Morphin Masters. In Dino Fury, after briefly becoming the Zenith Ranger, Zayto became one with the Morphin Grid and is now a Morphin Master himself.
7 Jen Scotts (Erin Cahill)
Time Force Pink Ranger.
The first and so far only Pink Ranger to lead a Power Rangers team, Jen Scotts is both a great leader and a great character. Power Rangers Time Force begins with one of the darkest moments in all of Power Rangers, with Red Ranger Alex seemingly dying in battle right in front of his team. The death of Alex, Jen’s fiancé, deeply affected her, but it did not stop the Pink Ranger from fighting. Time Force is a standout Power Rangers season, combining fun sci-fi action with strong character development. As a result, despite having appeared in only one full season, Jen is among Power Rangers’ best characters.
6 Jack Landors (Brandon Jay McLaren)
S.P.D. Red Ranger
Jack Landors is another example of a Power Rangers character who, despite not returning in multiple seasons or crossovers like other Rangers, made a name for himself in the franchise. Power Rangers S.P.D. deeply explored what it means to be a leader and invited viewers to discuss what it takes to be a Red Ranger. Jack’s reasons for becoming the leader of the B-Squad cadets, plus how he perceived the role of Red Ranger at first, set the stage for an incredible character arc that would later make Jack one of the best Power Rangers’ Red Rangers, despite his relatively brief run.
5 Jason Lee Scott (Austin St. John)
Mighty Morphin Red Ranger, Zeo Gold Ranger.
Power Rangers had dozens of seasons and countless characters after Mighty Morphin, but the original Power Rangers will always be synonymous with the franchise. That said, some of Jason’s best moments in the franchise happened after Mighty Morphin. Seeing the original Red Ranger return to the saga in Zeo after the actor exited the show midway through Mighty Morphin season 2 was a welcome surprise. As the Mighty Morphin Red Ranger, Jason was a solid leader. As the Zeo Gold Ranger, Jason got to be the wild card that shifted the power scale. Jason would also shine in “Forever Red” as well as in “Grid Connection.”
4 Andros (Christopher Khayman Lee)
In Space Red Ranger.
One of the most recognizable Power Rangers characters, Andros was the face of the season that saved the franchise. Power Rangers in Space is not only one of the best Power Rangers seasons ever made, but it is also what guaranteed the show would continue after Turbo’s disappointing viewership numbers. Unlike the dozens of teenagers with attitude recruited in Angel Grove, Andros was not from Earth and was already a Power Ranger when the show started. The In Space Red Ranger had a different backstory and separate goals from Earth Rangers, although he had also been trained by Zordon. Andros was the one to kill Zordon and save the universe.
3 Adam Park (Johnny Yong Bosch)
Mighty Morphin Black Ranger, Zeo Green Ranger, Zeo Turbo Ranger, S.P.A. Agent.
From a replacement character to a legendary Ranger who appeared in multiple shows, Adam created a fantastic Power Rangers legacy. He initially replaced Zack as the Mighty Morphin Black Ranger, including in the non-canon Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. Adam continued on the team after the Zeo transition, as well as when the Power Rangers shifted into Turbo. Adam would then return for an instant classic Power Rangers in Space episode, where he morphed into the Mighty Morphin Black Ranger again. The character was also part of the Once A Ranger and Power Rangers: Once & Always anniversary specials, which confirmed him as a Power Rangers legend.
2 Billy Cranston (David Yost)
Mighty Morphin Blue Ranger.
Arguably the most brilliant minds in the Power Rangers universe, Billy Cranston only had one Ranger form – Mighty Morphin Blue Ranger. Even still, Billy is one of the best and most important characters in the franchise. A loyal friend and warrior, the original Blue Ranger was the only character from the original five Power Rangers team to remain on Mighty Morphin for all three seasons. In Zeo, Billy proved he could lead the team even outside the battlefield. After Zeo, David Yost would only return to the franchise decades later in Once & Always. Fortunately, Billy also came back for Power Rangers Cosmic Fury.
1 Tommy Oliver (Jason David Frank)
Mighty Morphin Green, Mighty Mighty Morphin White, Zeo Red, Turbo Red, Dino Thunder Black.
Whether Tommy appeared too many times in Power Rangers is debatable, but there is no denying that Jason David Frank’s character was the best and most important Ranger in the franchise. The fact that Tommy Oliver’s Power Rangers forms include five different Rangers across four different seasons, plus all the crossovers Tommy was part of, summarizes how great of a character Tommy was. From “Green With Evil” to “Dimensions in Danger,” Tommy quickly became synonymous with Power Rangers. More than a returning character always showing up, Tommy was a well-developed Ranger, especially thanks to Dino Thunder. Tommy’s story was perfectly wrapped in the Soul of the Dragon comic.
