Link can fuse together the ultimate shield in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The fusion ability is learned very early on in the tutorial sections. While nearly any item can be melded, several combinations are more worthwhile both by resources and time.

While the process for making fusions is the same, several of the best items cannot be carried in the player’s inventories. Instead, one will need to go to specific locations and fuse on-site. This is typically done for very large items that would be impractical for Link to carry around.

10 Stone Slab Shield

Stone slabs – and other similar large panels – will increase the size of any shield. This will make it much easier for Link to defend while actively blocking enemy attacks. Different surfaces also provide a small amount of elemental resistance, typically against fire but sometimes against ice or electricity. But outside the protective nature, stone slabs have no additional utility or offensive power. This means while a practical fusion, it will serve no purpose when outside a fight. Because so much of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is exploration, players will want to reserve using stone slab shields for dungeons swarming with foes.

9 Brightbloom Shield

Many areas of Hyrule are shrouded in darkness or are otherwise hard to see without a lamp. Adding common Brightbloom Seeds in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to a shield will illuminate the immediate area and free up Link’s hands to hold another object. One downside is that the light projects directly from the shield’s surface, which means it could be behind or below Link, depending on if one has it placed on their back or is shield surfing. Best of all, Rubies are relatively common drops off of Talus enemies and are sold within Gerudo Town, so one will likely have a large surplus.

7 Spring Shield

Zonai Spring Shields in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom are great for combat and traversal. When holding the block button, the shield will now provide a knockback against single enemies. It is less effective against large groups, as the coil takes about half a second to retract again, but it is still great versus one or two large opponents. This can also work on even some bosses, though several are immune to knock back or knock-outs. Alternatively, the spring can be used while shield surfing to bounce Link into the air. The height distance isn’t the greatest, but it is nice that one fusion provides utility and defense.

6 Two-Handed Weapon Shield

A shield can also be fused with most two-handed weapons like claymores and hammers, especially top-tier ones like the Boulder Breaker or Fierce Deity Sword. This is technically no longer a shield, taking on the animation and properties of the chosen weapon. However, now players can actively block and have additional defenses similar to using a one-handed weapon with a shield. This lets one quickly attack with reckless abandon as it is much easier to stop enemy reprisals. While this is great in tough fights where enemies must be dispatched quickly, just like stone slabs, this isn’t a fusion needed while exploring.

5 Mine Cart Shield

Fusing a shield with a mine cart will give it wheels for shield surfing. This will improve movement speed, traction, and handling while navigating open terrain-like fields. It isn’t as impressive on rough surfaces like stone mountains and slippery snow, but it still provides added stability. The wheels are, of course, most useful when going downhill, regardless of terrain type. Unfortunately, Link cannot carry mine carts in his inventory. To build a mine cart shield, one must backtrack to various locations. Most mine carts in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom are found near mountains, mines, and sometimes Goron enclaves.

4 Rocket Shield

Putting a rocket on a shield will allow players to propel themselves vertically upward or horizontally forward. This gives it part of the utility of the Zonai Spring Shield, though without the direct combat prowess. At the same time, the rocket won’t launch Link that quickly; the total height is so vast that one can easily switch to their glider and reach any destination. This makes the fusion the ultimate combination to bypass puzzles and nab the rewards. Additionally, skilled players can fire off a few arrows while falling, allowing for fantastic slow-motion and well-aimed snipper shots against unaware targets.

3 Talus Heart Shield

Beating the Rocky Talus or other bosses in Zelda: TOTK will result in drops like stone-like Hearts or other durable resources. 2 Shock Like Stone Shield

Fusing a shock-like stone onto a shield will grant it a huge electric counter burst when successfully guarding. This provides not only some lightning damage but will momentarily stun large groups of monsters. Shock-like stones are common, as they are used in many crafting recipes, including potions and some cooking recipes in Zelda: TOTK. If one does run out, they can be quickly gathered by killing shock–type enemies roaming around central Hyrule. Other elemental stones also cause a similar explosion, though the secondary effects, like burning fire, are not as useful as the few seconds of stunning.

Placing a mirror onto the end of a shield will cause it to deflect a ray of sunlight. When pointed at a foe, it will temporality blind and daze them. This is a great defensive tactic as it can completely lock down some of the most troublesome monsters in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Link does need to be actively blocking for the sunshine to appear, and there is some limited aiming involved. This can make it a little harder to follow up with a strong attack on a helpless enemy, but it is still wonderful not to worry about an enemy assault.
