The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has received many positive reviews and fans are mostly enjoying their experience, however, even a game as incredible as TOTK isn’t without its flaws. Some complaints have started surfacing from players, although most are still loving the game regardless. Despite its drawbacks, it is a quality entry into the Zelda series.


Reviews of Tears of the Kingdom have been consistently listing the latest Zelda title as a “must-play” and it’s already been named a strong contender for Game of the Year for 2023. Like its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, this open-world exploration adventure gives players the freedom to play as they would like with many different varieties of things to do. Unfortunately, some of the same disappointing feedback that was given for BOTW has also found its way into TOTK.

10 Lack Of Accessibility Features In Zelda: TOTK

Tears of the Kingdom did make some improvements over BOTW with accessibility, such as no longer requiring motion controls. Nevertheless, in an age where more developers are making strides towards being fun for all, TOTK‘s design is less friendly in terms of accessibility. Some quests require the use of audio cues, others require sensitive controls for the Ultrahand ability, and the darkness in the Depths can be an insurmountable challenge even with the use of in-game items that are supposed to improve it. These are just a few of the difficulties some players who benefit from accessibility options have found to be lacking.

9 TOTK Is Too Similar To BOTW

As a sequel, Tears of the Kingdom needed to capture a similar feeling while still making itself stand out from Breath of the Wild. Despite TOTK making many improvements over BOTW and offering new abilities and features, some players feel that the game fails to stand out on its own and simply feels like a glorified DLC. Much of this is due to the graphics and overworld being similar for both titles.

Sadly, this is not the case, and Tears of the Kingdom is a single-player game. Prince Sidon, and other Sages in the game, can accompany Link for certain quests as companions to assist, but they are AI controlled.

Particularly for gamers who are playing Tears of the Kingdom in handheld mode on a standard non-OLED Nintendo Switch, there have been reports of performance issues and lag. The Switch has struggled to keep up with some of the animations and even while docked, some players have noted that their consoles have been getting very hot. For the most part, it sounds as though these issues are few-and-far-between, but for a game that is exclusive to only one platform, it is disappointing to see problems like this.

Even with the rave Metacritic reviews that Tears of the Kingdom has gotten, most reviewers note the same issue that it can be difficult to get the hang of how to rotate and move objects with Link’s Ultrahand ability. Though this has not been a large enough problem to lower scores for the game, it has been one that the general population seems to agree with. The XY axis rotation of objects can be tricky, and attaching items in the correct spots with the Ultrahand can end up a bit frustrating for some.

5 The Graphics Of The Nintendo Switch Aren’t Impressive

The Nintendo Switch has been around for six years now and there’s a new Switch 2 console in development. BOTW was one of the first games on the Switch and was also released for the Wii U, but now with more modern consoles featuring greatly improved graphics, there has been some negative feedback regarding Tears of the Kingdom looking the same as Breath of the Wild. This could have been a conscious choice by developers to connect the two games visually or was due to the limitations of the console. Either way, players are disappointed in its graphics quality.

4 Weapon Durability Is Still Present In Tears Of The Kingdom

TOTK developers tried to sidestep BOTW‘s weapon durability complaints by adding the new Fuse ability, so players could create their own weapons and have fun putting new things together. Fuse has been a very popular game mechanic, but weapon durability remains an aggravating challenge. The pride felt in crafting an incredible weapon is quickly dissolved when that weapon breaks the second time it is used.

Though the Fuse ability can be used in seemingly limitless ways to craft useful items for Tears of the Kingdom, it is not without its own nuisance. Items that Link has in his inventory cannot be fused onto a weapon until after the player drops them on the ground first. This is a simple step, but many players feel it is time-consuming, particularly during a battle, and makes little sense. Even if Link had to take it out and hold the item, that would at least be more understandable than needing to toss things on the ground first.

Of Link’s new abilities in TOTK, the most notable is Ultrahand. This feature is useful for crafting vehicles, bridges, or other objects, and is often a crucial aspect of some of the puzzles in the world and Shrines. In addition to the movement and rotation being difficult, as was mentioned above, the basic controls for attaching objects and the camera movement are clunky feeling. The feature is an innovative one for the game which can be used in many fun ways, but it still feels as though there are some wrinkles to smooth out.

The biggest mistake TOTK has made that is aggravating players is, simply, the inability to pet the dogs in Hyrule. These sweet dogs are programmed to look adorable and roll around in front of Link begging to be petted, while Link merely stands and watches. This oversight of the developers is one that has carried over from BOTW and has continued to baffle many players on why something so simple that would mean so much to many has been left out.

TOTK is a wonderful game full of exciting quests, dungeons, and tons of exploration for players to enjoy. The new abilities that the game has added provide new ways to encourage creativity and allow players to solve puzzles in any number of ways, or even just play with crafting cool things rather than questing. Unfortunately, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom does contain flaws, just as any game will, but overall this remains a must-play and likely will continue on its path to becoming 2023’s Game of the Year.
