Disney should look to the past when it comes to reviving old properties for streaming. Between Disney Channel Original Movies and TV series, there is plenty of material from popular properties that could be used for new stories. Nostalgia reigns supreme for audiences who want to find out what happened to beloved characters after the movies and series ended.
That ‘90s Show has been renewed and could fix classic sitcom mistakes, proving it’s possible to produce a good revival series for streaming. Some Disney properties were short-lived and a revival for Disney+ would find proper conclusions. Revisiting shows and movies for a revival could reignite interest in the characters and original properties with the addition of updated technology, special effects, and storytelling for modern audiences.
So Weird
The short-lived So Weird aired on Disney from 1999 to 2001 for only three seasons. Following teenage Fiona as she tours with her rockstar mom, she encounters paranormal activity along the way including shape-shifters, alien invasions, and time warps. So Weird is a good introduction to the paranormal for younger audiences.
Paranormal TV utilizes tricks to seem real, but the scripted So Weird is like a toned-down version of The X-Files in comparison. There’s a significant tonal shift at the start of the third season with a new protagonist and more lighthearted story, but with advanced technology and special effects, a streaming revival of So Weird could bring the spooky paranormal to teenage audiences. The success of darker shows like Riverdale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina prove So Weird could succeed if revived today.
The Rescuers
The Rescuers was released in 1977 followed by The Rescuers Down Under in 1990. The films chronicle the adventures of Miss Bianca and Bernard as part of the Rescue Aid Society, saving children from dangerous situations. With catchy music, Bernard is a scaredy-cat compared to the adventurous Miss Bianca. Nevertheless, she brings Bernard out of his shell for the children’s sake.
Disney has been releasing plenty of animated movies since Strange World, so a revival of The Rescuers should be considered. A revival of The Rescuers could find Miss Bianca and Bernard still saving children while teaching young audiences about the danger of strangers. In addition, the Rescue Aid Society should be front and center in a revival to explore more situations requiring rescue.
Kim Possible
Airing from 2002 to 2007, Kim Possible follows the teenage titular character fighting crime alongside her best friend, Ron Stoppable, and his naked mole rat with the help of a computer genius named Wade. With countless villains trying to take over the world, Kim manages her high school life with her crime-fighting life. The Kim Possible series finale ends with Kim and Ron graduating from high school.
The voices of Kim and Ron, Christy Carlson Romano and Will Friedle currently host the I Hear Voices podcast, welcoming guests who voice cartoons and video games. The duo could easily return to their voice roles in a revival of Kim Possible with Kim and Ron grown up and still fighting crime. Though Carlson Romano also starred in Disney’s canceled Even Stevens, Kim Possible is more likely to receive a revival as Kim is a relatable lead character compared to the disastrous Stevens family.
Zenon: Girl Of The 21st Century
Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century is a Disney Channel Original Movie released in 1999 with two sequels in 2001 and 2004. Set in the future, Zenon is a teenage girl who lives on a space station. Chronicling her antics, Zenon must regularly fight off aliens to save the space station’s residents. Sprinkle in traveling to Earth and fun music and Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century is an underappreciated movie.
The final movie, Zenon: Z3, takes place in 2054 when Zenon is eighteen. A revival of the Zenon series would find the space station significantly in the future as Zenon takes over adult responsibilities. After saving the space station countless times, Zenon could become the Commander and continue chronicling the challenges of living in space.
Lizzie McGuire
The canceled Lizzie McGuire revival was a missed opportunity. Airing from 2001 to 2004, Lizzie McGuire follows the titular character navigating school, romance, and friendships. Lizzie is a realistic example of the awkward teen years, seeking social acceptance from peers. She struggles with body image, embarrassment, and relatable situations for young audiences.
Lizzie McGuire still deserves a revival. For such a relatable series, a revival would be just as relatable for adult audiences if done correctly. Lizzie navigating romance as an adult would likely be just as embarrassing and awkward as teenage Lizzie. Adulthood doesn’t come with a handbook, but a Lizzie McGuire revival would be the closest thing.
Cheetah Girls
Raven-Symone returns in the That’s So Raven revival, but there’s another property that needs to be revived: The Cheetah Girls. Airing in 2003, The Cheetah Girls follows an all-female pop group on their rise to stardom. Struggling with secrets and entitlement, the group has its fair of issues that seek to tear them apart. Spawning three movies, world tours, several albums, a clothing line, and toys, The Cheetah Girls left a mark on Disney.
Though Raven-Symone has been open about her experience, it’s time to make amends as a revival of The Cheetah Girls could see where the girls are as they have become adults. A revival could follow their solo music careers and careers outside the entertainment industry with the idea of a reunion tour. The Cheetah Girls had fun, girl-power music that would only get better with a revival.
Halloweentown
Halloweentown spawned four separate Disney Channel Original Movies from 1998 to 2006. Ghost, mummies, trolls, witches, and more have shunned the mortal world for their own little community in an alternate universe in Halloweentown. The main character, Marnie, learns about her connection to the town, saves everyone from the evil warlock Kal, and organizes a student exchange program between her mortal school and Halloweentown High.
Halloweentown inspired a real-life town to celebrate every fall, proving audiences crave more. Kimberly J. Brown, who plays Marnie, is even engaged to her Halloweentown II costar, Daniel Kountz. A revival of the popular franchise should find an adult Marnie navigating Halloweentown as the mortal grows to accept the trolls, witches, etc.
