Aquaman may have some lingering fans who see him as a joke character, but one cosplay proves that Arthur Curry is the Thor of the Justice League.
An amazing costume is making a very convincing argument that Aquaman should be regarded as the Thor of the Justice League. Cosplayer Jennings Brower nails the Atlantean hybrid’s look in a display that proves Arthur Curry is absolutely not a joke.
The last few years has seen an imprivement in Aquaman’s profile, likely thanks to his self-titled box office smash hit, as well as actor Jason Mamoa’s portrayal of the hero. However, a good chunk of Arthur’s history has been spent trying to combat the negative stereotype that he’s a ‘lame’ character. Much of Curry’s bad reputation comes from the Super Friends cartoon from the 1970s that was severely lampooned by later generations. Despite his epic adventures in the comics, Aquaman was the butt of many jokes for years over his perceived lackluster ability to ‘talk’ to fish.
And, even though Aquaman’s public image has improved, there are still a few fans willing to write the hero off as the Justice League’s worst character. But one fan won’t hear of any slander towards the King of Atlantis and his amazing photo may just shut the Aquaman haters up for good. Cosplayer Jennings Brower took to the shores dressed as the Justice League’s Aquaman, trident in hand, ready to show off his excellent costume to the world. On Instagram, Brower posted a photo (captured by photographer Benjamin Farren) that presented Brower’s cosplay in the most appropriate manner possible. Raising his trident to the heavens, a wave crashes against the rocks Aquaman stands upon, sending droplets of water feet above the cosplayer’s head. Brower stands just as stoic as Aquaman would on an epic splash page in an outfit reminiscent of the DCEU’s take on Arthur’s classic orange and green costume.
Users raved over the picture, with comments praising Farren’s photography as well as the Aquaman cosplay that Brower completely nails. Aside from bringing the page of an Aquaman comic to life, the picture really communicates how regal and powerful Arthur really is. As much as some comic fans may want to joke about the character, this cosplay gets something about Aquaman that’s lost on some fans: that the hero is basically the sea-faring equivalent to Thor. Fans of both Aquaman and Thor might have noticed there are a few parallels between the two heroes. Both are leaders of a powerful race. Both are warriors and have a tough fighting spirit. And just as Aquaman rules the water, Thor can control lightning. And yet, Aquaman’s suffered for decades over one cartoonish property and a joke that refused to die. But thankfully fans like Jennings Brower and Benjamin Farren can create photos that expertly capture the spirit of a hero like Aquaman and give him the respect he deserves.
Their efforts show that Arthur is far from someone who just talks to fish. Like Thor, Aquaman is a noble, yet intimidating figure that gives the Justice League a touch of royalty and power.
