The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage will center on the beloved ACValhalla character Basim, but Ubisoft has revealed there may be another character in the story who will be even more important. Announced alongside two other projects – including the next mainline Assassin’s Creed game, set in Feudal JapanMirage will show the origins of Basim in ninth-century Baghdad.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage‘s setting of ninth-century Baghdad was part of a time period called the Islamic Golden Age, and will be home to many historical figures not unlike past games. The game is a return to form in many ways to older Assassin’s Creed titles – there will be a renewed focus on stealth and tracking targets, and Mirage has rid itself of RPG mechanics like leveling and acquiring loot in favor of narrative. The setting of the game will still feel alive with things for players to discover, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage‘s Baghdad setting and its inhabitants will help show the many influences that shaped Basim into who he is in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

With such a larger focus on story, the development of Basim’s character and backstory is paramount for Assassin’s Creed Mirage. However, much of Basim’s story is shaped by those who he encounters throughout Baghdad. A recent interview has given new information about the game’s characters, with one in particular holding great importance.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage’s Ali Is An Important Historical Figure

Recently, Screen Rant had the opportunity to speak with Assassin’s Creed Mirage‘s Narrative Director Sarah Beaulieu. The interview discussed shaping the world of Baghdad and the renewed narrative focus on telling Basim’s Assassin’s Creed story before AC Valhalla. While discussing the characters most important to Basim’s story, Beaulieu elaborated on one of her favorites, saying:

In the story, Ali, one of my favorite ones, actually, Ali is the leader of what was called the Zanj Rebellion. It’s a major historical event that we wanted to depict in the game. He was the leader of this rebellion, and he’s going to have a huge impact on Basim. A character evolution is built on all the characters’ evolutions around that character. So yes, working with these historical figures that already have a story that’s written in, we want to respect that as much as possible, and we want the player to experience what this was for Basim to actually meet this character, and what huge impact they’re going to have on him. So Ali’s is one of them, and a very, very, very charismatic one.

The character Beaulieu is referring to is Ali ibn Muhammad, a ninth-century man who had a significant historical role in a rebellion that lasted over a decade. It’s unknown how much the Zanj Rebellion will be involved with the game’s overall narrative – the game begins in the year 861, while the Zanj Rebellion began in 869. While the event itself may not appear in the story of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, it was one of the most significant events of the late 800s. Ali’s ability to garner support for the Rebellion is perfectly in line with how charismatic Beaulieu describes him, and it will be interesting to see how Basim fits into the history alongside Ali as characters in the Assassin’s Creed timeline.

Even more compelling than the importance of the Zanj Rebellion historically is Beaulieu’s great excitement when talking about Ali and his role in Assassin’s Creed Mirage. In order for Basim to be a strong character, he needs both internal and external motivation, the latter of which it sounds like Ali will provide. While a smaller Assassin’s Creed game may initially sound disappointing to some, it means the emphasis on world-building and its characters will truly get a chance to shine. A main character’s story is only as good as the other characters who have influenced them along the way, meaning that the importance of Ali’s presence in Assassin’s Creed Mirage to Basim’s story shouldn’t be overlooked.
