There, Ken is delighted to learn about the patriarchy which he brings back to Barbieland and turns into his own “Kendom” by brainwashing the Barbies into subservience, which sets up the joke about the Snyder Cut.
During a recent Q&A at the WGA West headquarters (via Variety), co-writers Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach revealed that the Barbie movie’s joke about Zack Snyder’s Justice League was almost a reference to a different director’s cut – Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, poking fun at how it added scenes to make it more obvious that Deckard was a replicant and removed the voice-over. Gerwig: One of the Barbies says to Ken, “Oh my god, I never would have realized that Deckard was a replicant.” Then when she gets unbrainwashed, there’s a version where she said, “I liked the voiceover. I needed it to help me understand what was happening. Nobody’s following this.”
Baumbach: It wasn’t making fun of him. We loved him as we love all of our references.
Gerwig: Every reference we had was out of love. We love Sly Stallone. Everything was a lighters-up tribute.
The Barbie Movie’s Snyder Cut Joke Explained
With a subversive script by Gerwig and Baumbach, the Barbie movie makes references to a number of movies, including its opening parody of 2001: A Space Odyssey and a joke about The Godfather. One of the most memorable though is the swipe at Zack Snyder’s Justice League given it was just recently released in 2021. After a monologue from America Ferrera’s Gloria begins to break the Barbies out of their subservient trance, Alexandra Shipp’s Writer Barbie describes the experience as. “It’s like I’ve been in a dream where I was really invested in the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League.“
After the joke drew the ire of the passionate Snyder fandom, Gerwig responded in a previous interview. The director said she doesn’t “have a dog in this fight” and didn’t even know all the “ins and outs” of the Synder Cut movement when she wrote the joke. The reference, as Gerwig explains, was merely meant to signify the shifting states of Shipp’s character. In both cases – Barbie‘s joke about Zack Snyder’s Justice League and the cut reference to Blade Runner – the goal was not to mock these subjects, but to poke fun at them in a well-natured manner.
