Batgirl movie directors, Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi, already have a meeting set with new DC Studio’s head, writer-director James Gunn. The DCU film would have introduced the titular character into the expanding superhero shared universe with Michael Keaton returning to don the cape-and-cowl as Batman, a first since his appearances in Batman (1989) and Batman Returns. The Mummy star, Brendan Fraser, who has recently received acclaim for his upcoming role in Darren Arronofsky’s The Whale, was also set to star in the film as the villain, Firefly. Unfortunately, Batgirl was suddenly canceled in early August to the surprise of many, although the film had wrapped filming.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Fallah and El Arbi have revealed that they already have a meeting set with DC Studios new co-CEOs and co-chairs Gunn and Peter Safran. Although the directing duo had Batgirl unceremoniously scrapped, they still intend to work with DC Studios on future projects. Fallah and El Arbi shared that Gunn has already contacted them to show his support during the fallout of Batgirls‘ cancelation, yet the group has not met with the director formally. However, El Arbi explained that plans are set in motion, revealing, “the meetings are in the books.”
What Other DC Projects Could Batgirl’s Directors Work On?
Fallah and El Arbi were publicly devastated by Batgirl‘s cancellation by Warner Bros. But the partners are still open to complete another film for DC Studios under the one condition that the movie is actually released. With DC Comics carrying a vast library of unique characters, the directors have a healthy list of intellectual property to choose from, including a future Man of Steel film, a Black Adam sequel, or any number of the dozen DC projects that have either been announced or discussed within the past few years.
Although their future with DC Studios is not set, El Arbi admitted that they are interested in reviving Batman Beyond and adapting the futuristic Dark Knight to the big screen. Developed by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Alan Burnett for the WB Network in 1999, the animated series centered on Terry McGinnis, a teenager groomed by Bruce Wayne to replace him as the protector of Gotham. Batman Beyond went on to receive critical acclaim and developed a strong following as the series expanded into DC Comics continuity.
As Fallah and El Arbi are scheduled to meet with Gunn, and with their eyes set on future DC projects to include Batman Beyond, the directors could still contribute to the DCU. Although Batgirl‘s shocking cancelation remains a heavy weight on their backs, Fallah and El Arbi can still prove themselves with Gunn taking the reins of DC Studios, an acclaimed creator of both DC and Marvel projects. Gunn’s experience in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the positive response with The Suicide Squad give the Batgirl directors a mentor that can lead them into the future of the DCU.
