Big Bang Theory Producer Has Regrets About Penny’s Pregnancy Twist – Armessa Movie News

The Big Bang Theory producer Steve Holland admits to having regrets about how Penny’s pregnancy plot twist in the finale played out. As the original romantic pairing of The Big Bang Theory, Penny and Leonard’s love affair was developed effectively — that was until they got married. Since then, they were essentially relegated to side characters and The Big Bang Theory final season attempted to fix this by giving them a last-minute conflict.

Throughout The Big Bang Theory season 12, Leonard and Penny had conflicting stances on having kids. Penny was vehemently against it, while her husband wanted to expand their family. By the end of the sitcom, however, it was revealed that not only was Penny pregnant, but she was also excited about it, essentially contradicting her earlier opinion on the matter. This understandably drew criticisms with Holland admitting in Jessica Radloff’s book, The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story Of The Epic Hit Series that he has some regrets about how the plot was executed. Read his quote below:

“I wish we had earned it a little bit more, getting to that reveal. Some people called us out, and maybe rightly so, that Penny made the decision not to have kids and was OK with it, and then ended up pregnant. People were like, “Why does she have to? Why can’t she be okay without kids?” And those are perfectly legitimate feelings. It sort of comes with the time jump we did in the finale, but we talked about whether there were other ways to do it, like what if she had a pregnancy scare that turned out to be false and she was disappointed. We talked about ways to get her to that moment that didn’t feel quite so abrupt. I wish we had Penny take one more step before we got to the finale.”

How Big Bang Theory Could Have Fixed Penny’s Pregnancy Twist=

Despite The Big Bang Theory finale being generally good, it wasn’t perfect. It had some character issues that stemmed from uneven storytelling that put a lot of focus on Sheldon and Amy’s Nobel bid prize. Raj is primarily the victim of this since his plot ended up nowhere. Somehow, Penny’s pregnancy plot twist was affected by it because the sitcom could have easily found ways to ground the narrative and justify the last-minute reveal that she and Leonard were expecting their first child.

If The Big Bang Theory only spent more time tackling the matter then it could have become one of the most nuanced narratives in the show ever. The premise for the arc made sense; Penny was afraid that having kids would derail the career that it took her years to figure out, while Leonard had always been interested in building a family with her. However, because The Big Bang Theory neither fully explore each other’s stance nor showed that they were actively trying to find a compromise, it looked like Penny was forced to do something she really didn’t want to do.

Kaley Cuoco was against the idea of Penny becoming pregnant, but, the producers didn’t listen. It’s similar to Mayim Bialik’s gripe about Amy’s makeover at the end of The Big Bang Theory finale. At this point, Penny’s divisive arc could not be undone, but Young Sheldon can actually fix it with an update from adult Sheldon about how the Hofstadters’ family life is going.
