Black Panther Wakanda Spinoff Gets Cautious Update From Marvel Exec – Armessa Movie News

A film producer for the Marvel Cinematic Universe offers some information on the development of the Black Panther spinoff show about Wakanda.

Marvel producer Nate Moore gives an update on Black Panther spinoff series centered on the kingdom of Wakanda. Black Panther became a sensation upon its release in 2018, giving viewers an in-depth look at T’Challa’s (Chadwick Boseman) kingdom, history, and rich family life after his debut in Captain America: Civil War. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the movie fascinated audiences with its portrayal of the isolated and high-tech Wakanda, setting off demand for a spinoff series centered on the nation soon after the movie’s debut. Black Panther fans even signed a Change.org petition in the hopes that Marvel would create a Wakanda-based spinoff show.

In 2021, reports indicated that there were two potential Black Panther spinoffs in development at Marvel for streaming on Disney+, with Coogler creating both a series centered on Danai Gurira’s Okoye and the long-anticipated Wakanda spinoff. The rumored Okoye show was said to focus on the Dora Milaje leader’s origin story, but little information was offered about the Wakanda series, which was later confirmed by Disney as part of the company’s deal with Coogler. Now, a producer has expressed that, though the Wakanda series is still on the table, viewers will have a bit longer to wait.

While speaking with Collider, Marvel Cinematic Universe producer Moore offers an exciting update on the Disney+ MCU Ironheart series starring Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, saying that “it’s nearly complete.” He gives a less promising update on the Wakanda spinoff, however, stating that they have prioritized the Black Panther sequel as well as the completion of Ironheart, which makes sense, since the Iron Man successor will be introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. See what Moore has to say below:

Because of the amount of time and attention that went into this film, and frankly the Ironheart show, that is probably not as far along as people want it to be, but there are certainly great ideas that we’re still talking to Ryan about. So, we’ll see how far we can get with it.

What A Wakanda Show Can Explore

Though the demand is high for the Wakanda series, its nebulous place in the timeline offers some flexibility to creators in terms of its release. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is already hitting theaters four years after its predecessor. In addition, since Riri Williams will make her MCU debut this year and Ironheart is already on the roster for next fall, those stories have a sense of urgency attached that the Wakanda series has been able to avoid. However, it’s heartening to see that Coogler is still working on developing the project, which could explore a number of stories. For example, given the kingdom’s extremely advanced technology, it could be compelling to delve into the nation’s past and reveal the origins of Wakanda.

Conversely, a Wakanda series could focus on the day-to-day operations of the nation, either following the members of its court or the regular citizens of the kingdom going about their lives in the captivating country. Getting more specific, it could be interesting to explore how the events of Avengers: Infinity War and the subsequent Blip affected the people of Wakanda in the five years leading up to Avengers: Endgame. Alternately, the delay in producing the spinoff could actually benefit the series, which could take inspiration from the events yet to come once Black Panther: Wakanda Forever opens in theaters this November.
