Warning: SPOILERS for the first 2 episodes of Rabbit Hole!Rabbit Hole, the fascinating new series from Paramount+, follows Kiefer Sutherland’s John Weir as he races to escape a fake murder charge and tries to turn the tables on his enemies. But before his survival instinct goes into overdrive, viewers meet him as a specialist in corporate espionage, manipulating stocks and terrorizing the wealthy for his own company’s gain. Creators Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (who previously worked on This Is Us and WeCrashed) skillfully introduce him at his best before dropping him into the worst circumstances of his life.
Rabbit Hole kicks into high gear once Weir has amassed a team of unlikely allies to help him find the real culprits and stop their reign of technological terror. Two members of that team include big-hearted attorney Hailey Winton (Meta Golding), whose recent run-in with John does not make him her favorite person, and Dr. Ben Wilson (Charles Dance, Game of Thrones), whose familial connection to John is kept a total secret until the end of season 2.
Screen Rant spoke to Dance and Golding about how their characters fit into the world of Rabbit Hole, the balance of comedy and corporate espionage in the scripts, and the dash of romance that fans can look forward to.
Screen Rant: Charles, Your entire character is a spoiler, but this won’t be out until the first two episodes are. Would you say that Ben is a misguided but doting father, or is this a Tywin Lannister situation with, “My children are props for my legacy?”
Charles Dance: No, he’s nothing to do with Tywin. Tywin Lannister is a feudal character. Though I think Ben’s motives certainly, as far as he’s concerned, are the right motives for some quite extraordinary behavior along the way. But as you say, almost every aspect of Ben is a spoiler, so we can’t really talk about it. The fact that you know Ben is John’s father is all you’re kind of allowed to know, really.
I’m loving the banter between John and Hailey. Can John find romance or is he too broken a man?
Meta Golding: You know what? I think everybody should have a chance for love. And I think one thing that is great about this is that you’re seeing adults dating in a weird way, like grown, complicated people. We’re trying to save the world, but [also] trying to get to know each other. I think that’s just an aspect of it. Sometimes we’d be on a [mission], but we’re still trying to get to know each other in that way.
There’s unexpectedly humorous interactions between all the characters given the very dire circumstances. What is it like balancing that on set with each other and with Kiefer?
Meta Golding: That was something that I liked about the script. Because the script has these big concepts, but then in the end, it’s just human beings. And as we all know, funny things happen all the time, even when it’s sad or scary or whatever. It’s just human beings. That’s what I liked, and what I thought was a little different about the script.
Charles, there is a younger you in the series. Did he ask how to be you, or did you reflect on Ben’s younger self at all?
Charles Dance: I recorded some lines, if I remember rightly, but I don’t know that they served any purpose. I mean, he made a pretty good job of it. He’s much better looking than me!
