Warning: SPOILERS for Cobra Kai Season 5The introduction of the Sekai Taikai in Cobra Kai season 5 could definitively answer the Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) debate in season 6 – if the adult senseis also fight in the international tournament. The Sekai Taikai is an innovation of Cobra Kai season 5, which retconned Terry Silver’s (Thomas Ian Griffith) ultimate goal as the global expansion of the dojo he and John Kreese (Martin Kove) founded. By the end of Cobra Kai season 5, all three dojos – Miyagi-Do, Eagle Fang, and Cobra Kai – qualified for the Sekai Taikai, although the status of Silver’s dojo is up in the air following Terry’s arrest.
Since The Karate Kid, the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament has been the event that usually decides the saga’s teenage grudges. Daniel and Johnny are both two-time All Valley Champions, while Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña), Eli “Hawk” Moskowitz (Jacob Bertrand), and Tory Nichols (Peyton List) became All Valley Champions in Cobra Kai (although Tory’s title is now also in question following the revelation that Terry Silver cheated so that she could win). Having already repeated the All Valley twice, Cobra Kai has widened the saga now with an eye on the future by creating the Sekai Taikai as a more prestigious, international version of the All Valley, although it isn’t widely known in the United States. Cobra Kai season 5’s flashbacks fit the Sekai Taikai into “Miyagiverse” lore by revealing that in 1980, Terry Silver (Nick Marino) wanted to enter Cobra Kai in the Sekai Taikai, and his master plan in season 5 was intended to bring his dream to fruition.
At the end of Cobra Kai season 5, so much of the Sekai Taikai remains a mystery. It’s not clear whether the international tournament is only for teenagers like the All Valley is, or if it’s like the Kumite in Bloodsport and open to adults as well. If it’s the latter, then the possibility exists that Cobra Kai’s senseis could also fight in the tournament. If that’s the case, will Johnny and Daniel, as well as Chozen Toguchi (Yuki Okumoto), Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan), and even Terry Silver (if he’s released), John Kreese, or Kim Da-Eun (Alicia Hannah Kim) also compete in the Sekai Taikai? Further, are men allowed to fight women in the Seikai Taikai? And, if it comes down to it, would Johnny fight Daniel once more on the world stage to find out which of them is truly the best fighter in Cobra Kai season 6?
Who Will Win The Sekai Taikai In Cobra Kai Season 6?
Whether or not the adult senseis fight in the Sekai Taikai, Cobra Kai season 6 will be focused, as ever, on the teenage karate students who will now compete on the biggest stage of their lives. The Sekai Taikai becomes the next level for Miguel, Hawk, Tory, Kenny Payne (Dallas Dupree Young), Devon Lee (Oona O’Brien), Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan), and Samantha LaRusso (Mary Mouser). Even though Cobra Kai season 5 seemingly ended all the kids’ rivalries, even those that go back to the beginning of the series, the pressure to win the Sekai Taikai can be the spark that ignites the competitive fire among West Valley High’s karate students.
But who will potentially win the Sekai Taikai in Cobra Kai season 6? Given that Miguel, Hawk, and Tory have all won the All Valley – and Cobra Kai didn’t repeat season 1 by giving Miguel a second All Valley win the way The Karate Kid movies did for Daniel and Johnny – it stands to reason someone due for a tournament victory will win the Sekai Taikai. That makes the top contenders as Sekai Taikai Champions Robby for the boys’ side and Sam for the girls’ side. Samantha winning the Sekai Taikai in Cobra Kai season 6 would be an even bigger accomplishment after losing to Tory at the All Valley. But dark horses like Devon and Kenny can’t be counted out to win the Sekai Taikai in Cobra Kai season 6, either.
