Daredevil #11 by Chip Zdarsky, Rafael de Latorre and Matthew Wilson picks up after the devastation of the Fist’s stronghold by the Daredevils’ (Matt and Elektra Natchios) foes. With Elektra arrested by the Avengers after being framed for murdering the president, Matt goes to confront the Stromwyns, sibling billionaire enemies of Daredevil’s who participated in the attack on the Fist’s island. In their office, Daredevil appears to pledge fealty to the Stromwyns by cutting out his eyes in exchange for the release of Elektra and his other arrested allies. Once he draws him near, however, Matt attacks Quinn Stromwyn, shoving one of the billionaire’s eyes with one of his own.

Daredevil Has Fully Gone Off the Deep End

This violent action comes following a tumultuous time for Daredevil, one of Marvel’s most frequently punished heroes. Recently, Daredevil has been locked in a holy war with the Punisher, retrieving and enlisting a number of imprisoned criminals into his ranks for his crusade against the Hand. While Matt and Elektra – now married – serve as the King and Queen of the Fist, Frank Castle has been fighting as the newly appointed High Slayer of the Hand. All three were granted mystical powers in their new positions, leading to an epic confrontation between Matt and Frank. Though Daredevil beats the Punisher in their first battle, this short-lived victory is quickly met by both the destruction of his base and the dissolution of his army of criminals and vigilantes.

With the Avengers at his heels, few allies left at his disposal and available plans of action running out, Matt certainly has little left to lose. Even so, the violent display against Quinn Stromwyn provides a pretty shocking visual. In one terrifying act, Daredevil manages to secure the release of Elektra and all of their associates, their records wiped clean. It’s a display of intimidation unusually harsh for even the Man Without Fear, leaving two recently persistent thorns in his side with a permanent reminder of his wrath and ability. As Matt puts it, “Fear is control. It’s why I’m Daredevil. It’s why I dress as the Devil. And now they know. Only a man without fear can truly give it.

By fully embracing his persona of the Man Without Fear, Daredevil proves that he has the capacity to be one of Marvel’s most terrifying vigilantes, challenged perhaps only by sadistic figures like his adversary the Punisher himself. With Zdarsky’s Daredevil saga coming to a close soon, one can only wonder how much farther Matt can fall into the darkness.

Daredevil #11 is available now from Marvel Comics.
