The Faces of Death remake has now cast stars from both Netflix’s Stranger Things and HBO’s Euphoria. The original 1978 Faces of Death, from writer-director John Alan Schwartz, was an anthology-style film hosted by Michael Carr as pathologist Francis B. Gröss that purported to show real-life footage of shocking deaths. The amount to which the footage was real has been questioned throughout the years, with many but not all scenes later having been revealed to be fake, a controversy that also plagued its three sequels. Despite its divisiveness, the film was a hit, earning $35 million off its $450,000 budget.
Per Collider, the upcoming Faces of Death remake has cast Dacre Montgomery and Barbie Ferreira. Both are best known for their recent teen roles, with Montgomery playing Max’s bullying older brother Billy on Stranger Things and Ferreira playing body positivity advocate Kat Hernandez on Euphoria. They are the first stars to be announced for the film, which is being written by Isa Mazzei and Daniel Goldhaber for Lionsgate.
What Roles Dacre Montgomery and Barbie Ferreira Could Possibly Play in Faces of Death
Neither star is a stranger to shocking material, including in the roles that made them famous. For instance, Ferreira just held a recent role in Jordan Peele’s sci-fi horror outing Nope in 2022. Montgomery’s horror credentials go back even further, with an appearance in the 2016 Christmas horror movie Better Watch Out.
Although they have cut their teeth on the genre before, there isn’t exactly an obvious place for both of them to slot in. It seems likely that one or both of them could host the series of clips, either as a new version or relatives of Francis B. Gröss. However, the remake could eschew the original format and feature a more concrete narrative with the two stars discovering shocking footage and compiling it in a story akin to 2012’s Sinister.
However it chooses to deploy them, the new Faces of Death is an intriguing prospect. It seems unlikely that the film will harness the potency of the original cult films. However, if they put pedal to the metal, both stars could find themselves with a title on their resumes that pushes the envelope even more than the buzzy Euphoria‘s most shocking moments.
