Catherine Tate says it was an easy decision to appear in the upcoming Doctor Who special alongside friend and former co-star David Tennant. The English actor and comedian first appeared in the revival of the legendary sci-fi show as companion Donna Noble in the final scene of season 2 before appearing as a special guest star in the 2006 Christmas special. Tate would reprise her role as Noble in Doctor Who season 4, featuring as the companion of the Tenth Doctor, portrayed by Tennant. Hopes the character would appear again were confirmed with the announcement that Tate would return to Doctor Who for the 60th anniversary.

In an interview with British chat show The One Show (via The Radio Times), Tate talks about the unexpected opportunity to reprise her role as Donna in three Doctor Who anniversary specials that are due to air in 2023. She speaks fondly of her character, and mentions how comfortable it felt returning to the role. On whether her decision to return was an immediate yes, Tate says:

“Oh, gosh, of course it was. Absolutely a complete no-brainer. I don’t think David and I thought for a second we’d ever get another bite of those cherries. And we did. And it was like, I think for the both of us, it was like slipping into old slippers.”

How Doctor Who Could Shape Up Moving Forward

With Tate and Tennant returning to Doctor Who, it is an exciting time for a show that continues to find new ways of reinventing itself. The Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall era is over, and, with popular showrunner Russell T Davies returning, the outlook for the future looks promising. Not much is known about the storyline for season 14, but it will be Davies’ first on the show since 2010, which is big news for the direction that Doctor Who could take moving forward. Gatwa will be joined by former Coronation Street actor Millie Gibson, who will play companion Ruby Sunday. Stepping into such an iconic role will be a big step for Gatwa, and a great way for him to show his dramatic and comedic range.
