Elvis star Austin Butler is set to portray a crime boss in the upcoming City On Fire movie adaptation. Butler’s acting career has taken off recently thanks to the nearly universal critical and audience praise for his turn as Elvis Presley, a role which garnered him a Golden Globe for Best Actor and an Oscar nomination in the same category.

According to Deadline, Butler has been cast in the lead role of soldier turned mob boss Danny Ryan in the film adaptation of Don Winslow’s 2022 novel, City On Fire. The film, which will be produced by Sony Pictures 3000, is still in the early stages of development, with Butler being the only talent attached at this point. The movie will be a new addition to the mob/mafia genre as the story follows the rivalry between Irish and Italian gangs in New England.

Everything We Know About City On Fire

This will be Butler’s first starring role since Elvis, and the studio is banking on his newfound star power considering neither a screenwriter nor a director has been chosen yet. Sony 3000 Pictures, however, has reportedly made the project a high priority and will be meeting with writers and filmmakers immediately to get the movie in preproduction. Butler will also be producing, which will be his first such credit, alongside Shane Salerno and David Heyman, who previously worked with Butler on Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

Winslow’s novel is a crime story in a contemporary setting that borrows from Greek and Roman classics such as The Iliad, Odyssey, and Aeneid. The story begins with a modern-day Helen of Troy-type event which creates a rift between the Irish and Italian crime syndicates that control New England. The story spans decades as it follows Butler’s character Danny Ryan, who is forced to evolve from a simple soldier into a ruthless crime boss to protect his friends, family, and home from the Mafia, local cops, and the feds.

City On Fire represents an interesting challenge for Butler, who audiences know mainly for playing real-life people such as Tex Watson and Elvis Presley. However, Butler does have some experience in playing a character adapted from a novel, as he will play a major role in the upcoming film Dune Part 2. Butler is also set to star opposite Tom Hardy in the upcoming drama The Bikeriders and play the lead role in the Apple TV+ war drama miniseries Masters of the Air, which is expected to be released in mid-spring 2023.
