The upcoming Frasier reboot won’t feature the majority of its original cast, but the casting of a sitcom legend promises to make up for it.
A surprising casting choice raises hopes for the upcoming Frasier reboot starring Kelsey Grammer. Remakes, reboots and revivals have existed for a long time, but the 2010s and the 2020s are incredibly crowded with them, and with good reason. Famous TV shows such as That ’70s Show, The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, and Roseanne come from the golden age of serialized television comedies. More than two decades is enough time to spark a sense of nostalgia in new and old fans alike.
While remakes can experiment with new actors, most reboots and revivals need the original actors to make sense. For instance, Fuller House, being a revival of an ensemble show, can get around Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s absence by focusing on the rest of the cast, introducing new characters, and skirting around Michelle’s whereabouts, but a show that’s centered around its titular character, like Frasier, has no choice but to depend on the protagonist’s return. Kelsey Grammer is on board to reprise his iconic role, but the same can’t be said about the rest of the original Frasier cast. Fortunately, one actor will arrive to make up for it.
Nicholas Lyndhurst Is Incredible Casting For Frasier
The Frasier reboot will come to Paramount+ with original star Kelsey Grammer and UK sitcom icon Nicholas Lyndhurst joining as a new Frasier character. While Nicholas Lyndhurst’s resume doesn’t have any famous roles in American TV, he’s a sitcom legend in the United Kingdom due to his work in Butterflies, Only Fools And Horses, and Goodnight Sweetheart. Lyndhurst’s credits also include David Copperfield and New Tricks, but he’s most fondly remembered as the naive but well-meaning Rodney Trotter in Only Fools And Horses, which aired from 1981 to 2003, as well as Goodnight Sweetheart‘s time-traveling Gary Sparrow, whose popularity earned him a return in the 2016 special Many Happy Returns after the original series’ 1993-1999 run.
Nicholas Lyndhurst’s work proves that he has mastered the sitcom format. Considering his most popular role, it will be interesting to see the dynamic between Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier and Nicholas Lyndhurst’s unnamed character, as Frasier Crane is used to butting heads with his brother, David Hydes’ Niles Crane, while Lyndhurst’s Rodney Trotter is synonymous with his own brother, David Jason’s Derek Trotter. Grammer and Lyndhurst’s Frasier characters may not be related, but the sibling dynamic might still be there.
Frasier’s Revival Needed A Casting Boost (But Still Has Issues)
With so little information about the reboot disclosed so far, Frasier‘s lack of returning actors has become the main discussion. Their absence raises worries about how close the reboot will be connected to the original series and how well it will honor its origins. Nicholas Lyndhurst’s casting finally adds something else to look forward to, and if not nostalgic, his role can at least take Frasier in a brand-new direction. However, the Frasier reboot still needs to expand its cast, and it now has to live up to the level of Nicholas Lyndhurst. Besides, even with a star-studded cast, the reboot will eventually need to address what happened to all of Frasier Crane’s friends and relatives.
