One Game of Thrones update means HBO is now much closer to bringing to life a dragon that A Song of Ice and Fire readers have long wished for. Despite some well-documented problems, in particular with Game of Thrones‘ ending, HBO has largely done a great job of bringing Martin’s world of Ice and Fire to the small screen through both that series and its prequel, House of the Dragon. There are many elements that go into it – complex character arcs, political intrigue, family drama, epic battles – but one of the biggest is, of course, the dragons.

From the moment Daenerys stepped out of Khal Drogo’s funeral pyre with three baby dragons, the creatures have helped to define this world on TV. Drogon, Viserion, and Rhagal were all crucial to Game of Thrones, and then the dragons in House of the Dragon proved just as important, if not even more so. They’ve been brought to life with impressive CGI and their incredible power has been shown off in style, but with an Aegon the Conqueror prequel reportedly in development, it can introduce the one dragon who beats them all: Balerion the Black Dread.

Aegon The Conqueror Spinoff Means Finally Seeing Balerion In Action (After 25 Years Of Excitement)

With an Aegon the Conqueror prequel reportedly in the works, then that would also mean Balerion the Black Dread coming to screens. Balerion was, after all, the dragon ridden by the Conqueror himself, and so if the movie and show (or just one of those) happens, there’s no way the largest dragon Westeros has ever seen can possibly be absent. Balerion was crucial to Aegon’s Conquest: the greatest, most devastating weapon at his disposal. Seeing him is also something fans have been dreaming of for over two decades, as after a mention in A Game of Thrones he was given this tantalizing reference from Daenerys Targaryen in the second A Song of Ice and Fire book, 1998’s A Clash of Kings:

“Balerion … his fire was as black as his scales, his wings so vast that whole towns were swallowed up in their shadow when he passed overhead.”

Back then, of course, even the idea of any Game of Thrones dragons seemed like a pipe dream. But even after Daenerys’ dragons were brought to life, there still seemed to be no chance of Balerion, who died over 200 years before the events of the show. Balerion’s giant skull, seen in both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, seemed like the closest it may come until the news of an Aegon the Conqueor spinoff. Balerion would not just appear, but be central to the story, and essentially one of its main characters due to his bond with Aegon, fighting in key battles, and melting the swords used for the Iron Throne.

The dragons in House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones are all incredibly impressive feats of CGI, and that means there should be a lot of faith in an Aegon the Conqueror spinoff, which would not only include Balerion the Black Dread but also Meraxes and Vhagar (the latter of whom has, of course, already appeared in House of the Dragon). But while it can certainly get dragons right, Balerion is another level entirely. This is a dragon bigger and more destructive than any who have been seen before, and it needs to make sure to perfectly capture both his size and power.

There would arguably be no dragon with more pressure to get right than Balerion, because he is the biggest, most important dragon in Game of Thrones history. A lot has been written and said about Balerion, which means pre-conceived notions and ideas that a Game of Thrones spinoff would need to match. That all presents major challenges, but also ones that – given just how astonishing a sight Balerion should be if done right – is incredibly exciting as well.
