While modern films have focused heavily on both Godzilla and his rival Kong, the show will focus on the larger history of not only the mysterious Monarch organization but also the interactions between humanity and the other Titans throughout the Monsterverse timeline. The show is seemingly placing an emphasis on that very opportunity, even casting Kurt and Wyatt Russell as younger and older versions of the same character whose role will be explored over multiple decades. As fun as giant monster fighting is, expanding upon human characters can help provide a fresh perspective on humanity’s role in a world dominated by the god-like Titans. This will add some much-needed gravitas to the overall narrative of the Monsterverse, and help the audience understand the ground-level effects of the rise of the Titans, which go far beyond the giant creatures punching each other and firing energy beams.

Since Godzilla’s second movie, Godzilla Raids Again, he has fought other giant monsters. His role as a defender (and sometimes enemy) of humanity leads him into conflict with the monsters that threaten the world, and the Monsterverse has continued to emphasize this important feature of Godzilla’s persona, establishing him as the planet’s Alpha Titan. Justifiably, the movies have thus far only pitted Godzilla against monsters long since established by Toho as his adversaries and allies. A big draw for the four Monsterverse movies was the modern on-screen appearances of several of the known Titans in the Monsterverse after Godzilla vs. Kong.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will reveal new Titans, some of which were likely hinted at or briefly seen in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. As of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, at least 17 Titans had been discovered and were under the watch of Monarch. To ignore these other monsters given their size and roles as both allies and antagonists of humanity (and Godzilla) would be a huge miss for the Monsterverse, and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ episodic format allows for their introduction without over-stuffing a movie. An expanded roster of monsters can only enrich the overall Monsterverse narrative, and enhance Godzilla’s role as the Alpha Titan.
