He-Man’s best friend Orko met a horrific fate, becoming the godlike villain Dark Orko. In the 1983 He-Man & Masters Of The Universe, Orko was one of He-Man’s greatest allies and confidantes. Yet during the DC Universe vs Masters of the Universe miniseries, a new Orko arose – one who turned his vast powers to evil, and almost destroyed two worlds in the process.
DC Universe vs. The Masters of the Universe was written by Keith Giffen and Tony Bedard and drawn by Pop Mhan, Derlis Santacruz, Eduardo Francisco and Dexter Soy. The miniseries kicks off when Skeletor comes to Earth, allying himself with Black Alice and attempting to siphon off the planet’s magic. However, Skeletor is serving a mysterious master, revealed to be Dark Orko. In issue four, Dark Orko’s heartbreaking origin is revealed. As He-Man and the Masters were attempting to fight off Hordak and his army, a still innocent Orko took matters into his own hands. Orko tracked down the evil Skull of Power, hoping to destroy it. Sadly, Orko’s spell backfired, and he ended up absorbing every bit of the Skull’s power – as well as its evil. The evil of the Skull unlocked mental blocks that had been holding Orko back. Dark Orko then returned to his native dimension of Trolla, corrupting his species and turning them into his dark acolytes. Upon learning Orko had lost his soul and compassion, Teela, He-Man and Queen Marlena were horrified.
Orko Was Powerful But Bumbling, & It Cost Him
Orko, while not part of the original Masters of the Universe toy line, is still one of its most popular characters. Orko was created for the Masters animated series that ran in the 1980s. He was intended for comic relief, but he proved popular enough with fans to eventually warrant an action figure. An inhabitant of the dimension of Trolla, Orko is a powerful sorcerer – but also bumbling and anxious, which usually causes his spells to go awry. Orko is one of He-Man’s most trusted allies; indeed, Orko – along with the Sorceress and Man-At-Arms – was one of the few who knew that Prince Adam was actually He-Man. Orko was a good friend and ally… until he wasn’t.
Dark Orko Was Terrifying and Tragic
While his backfiring spells were played for laughs, Skeletor notes that Orko had the heart of a hero – which led him to try and destroy the Skull of Power. Orko, however, underestimated how powerful the Skull really was, and he paid the price. It was not enough for Orko to become corrupted; he took it upon himself to spread evil among his people and ensured they shared in his dark fate. In the series, the Masters confess they often overlooked Orko and barely gave him a thought during the conflict with Hordak. If this had not been the case, Orko may never have fallen to the dark side. Ultimately, Skeletor manages to banish Orko, ending the threat he poses but not bringing him back to the light.
Orko was a kind and compassionate member of the Masters, and it can be argued that he was the team’s heart and soul. However, in a world where true, supernatural evil exists, Orko’s ineptitude and his allies’ disregard had big consequences. DC Universe vs. The Masters of the Universe made Orko a terrifying villain to shock fans, but also commented on how He-Man secretly seeing Orko as a non-factor opened the door to his dark fate.
