With the Dance of the Dragons approaching, new artwork shows Rhaenyra Targaryen preparing to start a war in the upcoming season of House of the Dragon. After House of the Dragon season 1 set up the tragic conflict between childhood best friends Alicent Hightower and Princess Rhaenyra, their families have now driven them both into war. With Lucerys Velaryon dead at Aemond Targaryen’s hand, the time has come for Rhaenyra to rally her troops and her dragons.

Rhaenyra is already wearing her father’s crown in the show, but the art depicts her dressing in armor that bears a striking resemblance to Daemon Targaryen’s own draconic armor. She is also wielding the legendary Valyrian steel blade Blackfyre, which will become a weapon used against House Targaryen long after the end of House of the Dragon.
Will Rhaenyra Really Be Heading To War?
It isn’t too difficult to imagine Rhaenyra donning armor and carrying a sword of her own in House of the Dragon season 2. Alicent and Aemond have left her no other choice after Lucerys is killed when acting as a mere messenger. Rhaenyra ends season 1 looking downright murderous. With Daemon at her side to compel her to launch into a full-scale invasion, it is more likely than not that Rhaenyra will be willing to commit atrocities.
Even if Rhaenyra is not the one in the driver’s seat in House of the Dragon, war will be waged in her name. Daemon is already rallying dragons to take to war against Aegon, Rhaenyra’s half-brother. No matter what happens, the Blacks and Greens will be at war, and Rhaenyra will be the face of her people. The Greens are not likely to back down after taking the throne and killing Lucerys, and it isn’t likely that Otto Hightower would even let them.
If Rhaenyra is to become the Queen of Westeros — something which she hasn’t shied away from since the birth of her children — she will need to become the conqueror that the first Aegon was. It remains to be seen if she truly can. House of the Dragon is not likely to be impacted by the Writer’s Guild of America strike, so Rhaenyra will likely have a chance to head to war sometime in Summer 2024.
