However, before Sound of Freedom became a box office success it faced several challenges, including budgetary and distribution issues.
Sound Of Freedom’s Budget Explained
After its filming ended in 2018, Sound of Freedom landed a distribution deal with 20th Century Fox. Unfortunately, after the Walt Disney Company acquired 20th Century Fox, Sound of Freedom ended up becoming one of the projects the studio shelved. With what followed, the film’s producer, Eduardo Verastegui, spent more than a year getting rights for the movie from Disney. Unfortunately, as soon as Disney released the rights for the film, the COVID pandemic held the film’s crew back from releasing it in theaters.
On the bright side, after Disney released the Sound of Freedom‘s rights, the producer took it to Angel Studios. The studio acquired worldwide rights to the movie and used equity crowdfunding to raise money for its marketing and distribution. According to reports (via The Wall Street Journal), Angel Studios garnered funds worth $5 million in just 2 weeks after 7000 people invested in the project. Before Sound of Freedom acquired $5 million through crowdfunding, its overall budget was estimated to be $14.5 million.
How Much Sound Of Freedom Has Made At The Box Office (So Far)
Sound of Freedom made waves when despite being produced by a small studio, it gave Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny some tough competition on its opening day. While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny grossed just under $11.7 million on July 4, 2023, Sound of Freedom earned $11,563,200 even though it was played on relatively fewer screens than the Harrison Ford franchise film. Angel Studio had also used a “Pay it Forward” promotion that encouraged patrons to buy gift tickets for those who wished to watch the movie in theaters for free. This promotional strategy added $2,679,000 to Sound of Freedom‘s box office returns, raising its opening revenue to a whopping $14.2 million (via Deadline).
Sound of Freedom continued to succeed through its opening week and into its first weekend, including $18.2 million across Friday 7-Sunday 9 July 2023. The movie has since proven to be a word-of-mouth hit, actually increasing in its second weekend by bringing in around $27 million across July 14-16. That means Sound of Freedom has made $85,498,581 at the box office so far [via Box Office Mojo]. Typically, a movie needs to make 2.5x its production budget to break even, putting that point at around $36 million for Sound of Freedom, a hurdle it cleared within a week and has since smashed. Sound of Freedom is a major hit, and doesn’t show signs of slowing down.
