With its sequel, Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, potentially standing as the final offering in the franchise, the stakes for Mission: Impossible 7 have never been higher.
One of the major plot points of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has been the apparent death of a beloved character, former MI6 agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson). The character’s on-screen death, at the hands of terrorist adversary Gabriel (Esai Morales), has had fans on social media up in arms, with many Twitter followers clinging to hope that Ilsa may actually be alive, or that her death might be undone in Dead Reckoning Part Two. One dedicated fan who even has the display name ilsa faust’s eye patch deemed themselves to be a part of the “ilsa is still alive conspiracy club.”
Ilsa Faust’s Wife wrote out an entire thread of reasons why they believe Ferguson’s character is actually alive, including the movie’s title itself and the various Biblical references featured throughout the film.
Bensu Seol was straightforward when sharing her reaction, simply stating, “I am still hoping for a plot twist in part 2. She better still be alive.“
Darklina22 echoed these sentiments, hoping for “some amazing twist” in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two that will see Ilsa return alive.
Another fan, Katie, made a joke about Ilsa returning in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, using a popular meme from American Horror Story to reference her hoped-for resurrection.
Mariam was very direct when reacting to the big Mission: Impossible 7 death, writing only, “ilsa faust is alive.“
@Riftz007 looked to be keeping up a “Daily Reminder” that Ilsa is in fact alive, further demonstrating how many fans are refusing to accept her death.
For @pxlstht, Ilsa’s death actually seemed to impact his overall rating of the film, explaining that he’d give it “10 out of 10 if they keep Ilsa Faust alive.”
Is Ilsa Faust Actually Dead?
The Mission: Impossible franchise is one that has continued to defy odds and push boundaries. While Ilsa’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One death did seem to be a genuine and permanent event, there is a chance that this could be a plot point where all is not precisely what it seems. The internet is already filled with conspiracy theories from fans that her death may have been faked, with some pointing out the sudden and unexpected nature of it, as well as the fact the scene seems poorly executed.
There is also the question of where this leaves Ethan and the rest of the IMF crew as they go into a final showdown with Gabriel in Dead Reckoning Part Two. Ilsa has proven herself to be a highly capable agent since her first franchise appearance in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, and she would be a useful asset for the next film’s climactic battle. The Mission: Impossible franchise has featured a death fake-out before with Ethan’s wife Julia (Michelle Monaghan), and perhaps Ilsa’s fate is the latest example.
Interestingly, Ferguson actually has an IMDb credit for the final installment, which has further fueled speculation that her character could be alive. However, it is possible this could simply be via archival footage. If Ilsa turns out to be alive, it could be one of the biggest shocks of the franchise so far. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is a solid success so far, and the future looks bright. Fan reception, though, might be mixed if Ilsa doesn’t make a surprise return.
