The sixth film in The Purge franchise has received a disheartening update from franchise star Frank Grillo, who indicates the anticipated sequel may not be coming anytime soon. Grillo previously portrayed Sergeant Leo Barnes in The Purge: Anarchy and its sequel, The Purge: Election Year. Despite his character not appearing since the third installment of The Purge film franchise, the sixth Purge film will focus on Barnes and is confirmed to be his final appearance.

Now, speaking with ComicBook.com, Grillo paints a bleak future for The Purge 6 and its possible future release. He confirmed the script’s completion and Jason Blum and Michael Bay’s involvement in the movie, but says that The Purge 6 is no longer being prioritized for production. What Frank Grillo’s Update Means For The Purge Franchise

With The Purge seemingly no longer a priority for Universal and Blumhouse, it may be a while before The Purge 6 is produced and released. The next installment in the film series has been teased as Grillo’s last, with the story possibly focusing on a “remapped” America following The Forever Purge‘s ending. If The Purge 6 is set to tackle the titular event’s impact on America as a whole, then it would end up being a large-scale film with a much broader focus than other Purge movies.

The Purge films may not be major box office earners, but every film in the series so far has been successful against their budgets. This means the franchise is likely to continue in some form, but that other ongoing film projects may be more of a priority right now. Blumhouse themselves are involved in making the fifth film in the Insidious franchise, Insidious: The Red Door, a new The Exorcist film, and an adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s, all set for release this year. It’s possible The Purge 6 simply hasn’t been fit into their busy film schedule yet.

However, that also means there’s no telling when The Purge 6 will come to fruition or if Grillo will be available to return when it finally does go into production. There is still a strong chance that another film in The Purge franchise will be made, but for now it seems the series has been temporarily shelved. Until production is announced, it appears Grillo will be patiently waiting to return to The Purge for another horrific night as Barnes.
