Warning: Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #7!Groot’s evil arc in Guardians of the Galaxy has already come to an end with a surprising reversal, as the series clarifies that he was never a villain to begin with. After being infected by the last of the Branch Worlds, Groot becomes Grootfall, which initially was perceived as a deadly, galaxy-absorbing equivalent to Galactus. It isn’t until Groot ends up swallowing his friends that the Guardians can understand his true intentions.
Guardians of the Galaxy #7 – by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, Kev Walker, Matt Hollingsworth, and VC’s Cory Petit – explains Grootfall’s true nature, as Wiccan and Emperor Hulkling investigate the Manifold Territories, newly corrupted by Grootspace.
They encounter the equally Groot-corrupted Guardians of the Galaxy, but are confused to learn the situation isn’t as dire as previously expected.
Guardians #7 Confirm, “Groot Didn’t Go Bad”
In Guardians #7, the rechristened Guardians of Grootspace explain that everything and everyone who Groot has consumed are not dead after all, but will all in fact be able to come back in due time. The Guardians needed to be eaten by Groot to understand what he was truly up to. Rather than a villainous turn, Groot’s actions are explained to be a natural force beyond his control. Wiccan uses his powers to allow him and Hulkling to understand Groot’s true intentions, and are able to confirm everything the Guardians have been saying: “Groot didn’t go bad. He just did the thing that came naturally. And couldn’t start to explain why.”
Readers have wondered how far Groot’s villain arc would go, and how the character might be redeemed despite his seemingly devastating attack on the galaxy. Most speculation centered on the idea that the Guardians would pull Groot out of darkness. By pulling back on Groot’s villainy, and giving not only an explanation for his actions, but an out for the destruction and death he has caused, Marvel gives themselves the opportunity to return one of their most beloved characters to the status quo, making Groot a hero once more before all is said and done with this Guardians of the Galaxy arc.
Groot’s Actions Were Natural, Not Evil
The idea of the redemption arc is a common one in superhero lore. Many Marvel heroes have gone bad, only to be pulled back from their villainous ways; some of caused damage on a level approaching that done by Grootfall in the past several issues of Guardians. This makes reversals like the one in Guardians #7 common, with stories like this frequently revealing that the hero had been brainwashed all along, or was an evil clone the entire time. The Guardians of the Galaxy learning that Groot wasn’t evil, but in fact, was going through a natural process beyond their initial comprehension, is the latest take on this trope.
