Matilda’s telekinesis might not be her only special ability in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, as the 2022 movie teases a new magical power.

Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical movie on Netflix seemingly gives Matilda a new magical power. Based on the children’s novel of the same name, 2022 delivered an updated musical adaptation of Dahl’s book that was previously adapted as a live-action movie in 1996. Despite some of the differences that exist between the various tellings of the story, Matilda and her magical powers remain at the core of every adaptation. This is still true with Roald Dahls’ Matilda the Musical, in which Alisha Weir stars as the titular character.

The 2022 Matilda musical reimagining retains many of Matilda’s key characteristics and personality traits. She is incredibly witty and a certified genius despite having no schooling before going to Crunchem School. Matilda the Musical also is sure to keep the character’s magical powers, which she uses at a few important moments in her life. The explanation for Matilda’s telekinetic powers is thought to be the result of her high intellect. While it is standard for Matilda to have magic powers, Matilda the Musical seemingly gives her a new ability to go along with telekinesis.

Matilda’s Magic Powers Might Include Visions Now

Matilda’s magic powers now seem to include visions based on Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical. The 2022 movie features a new aspect of the story that revolves around Matilda telling her local librarian portions of a story about two circus performers that she is writing in her head. While the story appears to be loosely based on Matilda’s experiences in real life, even she is puzzled by how new portions of the story appear in her mind fully formed. It is not until later on in Matilda the Musical that it is revealed that this story is the real-life events of Miss Honey’s parents.

The revelation suggests that Matilda’s powers include having visions of the past, an ability known as retrocognition. While Matilda is a genius and a lover of literature, there is no plausible explanation for how she would know so many specific details about Miss Honey’s parents’ life. Since Matilda the Musical already operates in a fantasy world where magic or superpowers exist, this creates a path to explain how Matilda could see the past, and possibly even experience it. Her magic powers have expanded for the 2022 adaptation, resulting in Matilda the Musical making her even more powerful.

How Matilda’s Powers In The Musical Compare To The Original

The potential twist that Matilda’s powers now include retrocognition is a big change to her abilities. Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical is otherwise relatively similar to the original movie in terms of her power set. Ashley Weir and Mara Wilson’s versions of the character both had telekinetic powers, just as Matilda has in the books. This gives her the ability to control objects with her mind. In Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, she uses her magic powers to throw a can at Emma Thompson’s Miss Trunchbull, crush objects, and eventually even throw Trunchbull out of the school. Matilda comes quickly masters her abilities once she realizes they exist.

One major difference between Matilda the Musical and the original Matilda in terms of her powers is the frequency with which they are used. The original 1996 movie makes much more use of Matilda’s magical powers, resulting in her acting as a child wizard essentially. Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical scales down the use of these abilities by delaying when Matilda discovers them. She does put on a show in the end, but Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical still could leave some wanting more moments of magic.
