Almost twelve years after the launch of the first game in the series, the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection is being released as a massive collection of all 10 mainline games, freshly remastered and with extra content and even a new mode added. Developed and published by Capcom, this set of games allows fans of the originals as well as new players to experience the series on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, or PC. The collection even gives the ability to smooth those pixelated edges with an optional high-resolution filter.

The Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection has a lot of games in it, but the menus for selecting between the games are very clear and easy to use, with a 3D Mega Man there to help guide players. Each game has been crafted to have a seamless feel that makes it easy to forget they weren’t all created at the same time. The game’s original stories and mechanics are the same, although players can choose to activate the new Buster MAX mode to help make combat go faster for those who wish to focus on the story, although the frequent random encounters cannot be turned off.

Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection In The Net

When recrafting the Mega Man Battle Network games for this new compilation, Capcom did a good job of keeping the original feel of the games updated for more modern platforms. To compensate for the screen size difference, there are several artistic borders that players can choose from to take up the remaining space, rather than the developers trying to stretch the screen or cut out parts of it to make it fill the area.

Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection includes a lot of the extras from the original games as well, including all 499 Patch Cards, with an optional rule to let players decide whether to allow the use of Patch Cards in multiplayer battles. These cards are accessed in all the games after 3. There are also 15 special Chips that originally were released during events, including some which were only available in Japan previously.

Multiplayer is where the Mega Man Battle Network games truly shine, and in the Legacy Collection players can create private or public online matches and trade with others from all over the world. This works with all 10 of the titles in the collection, although cross-play with other platforms is not supported. The Nintendo Switch version is also compatible with local network communication in addition to online.

Capcom collections of older games tend to be great, and this new set is a wonderful example of the care they put into making them easy to navigate and exciting to find lots of the extra content that many players may not have had access to originally. The art gallery with concept art and official artwork for events plus the music player of 188 songs are wonderful to have included with the games. Overall, the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection is a very well-crafted trip down memory lane and will be a true treasure to fans of the original games, and fun for new players to have that much content provided.
