A new Stephen King adaptation has added three major cast members to its lineup. The movie will adapt King’s short story The Life of Chuck, from his anthology book If It Bleeds. Mike Flanagan, who already has a history of bringing King’s work from the page to the screen, will direct. While the SAG-AFTRA strike is still ongoing, an interim agreement was struck so that the movie could begin production earlier this month. Until recently, the only news in terms of casting was that Mark Hamill and Tom Hiddleston will star.

Deadline has reported that Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, and Jacob Tremblay have been cast in the next King movie, The Life of Chuck, in currently undisclosed roles. Ejiofor is known for his work in 12 Years A Slave as Solomon Northup and his time in the MCU playing Baron Mordo. Gillan is another Marvel alum, recently wrapping up her time as Nebula in the hit Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Tremblay previously worked with Flanagan, playing Bradley Trevor in Doctor Sleep, and will be starring alongside Peter Dinklage in the upcoming Toxic Avenger remake.

What Is The Life of Chuck?

After directing Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game, Flanagan has formed a working relationship with King over the last few years. He is currently working on both The Life of Chuck and a new show based on The Dark Tower. While working on the latter, he brought up to King the idea of turning the short story into a movie. King rejected making The Life of Chuck into a movie at first but was eventually convinced. Flanagan told King that if he got to make it, “it would be the best movie I may ever make.”

The story is told in reverse chronological order beginning with Chuck dying from a brain tumor, working backwards to his childhood. The story is presented in three acts that show different sides of the character. Hiddleston has been confirmed to play Chuck; there is a chance Tremblay will portray the character during his childhood. So far, the only other role that has been confirmed is Hamill’s, and he will play Chuck’s grandfather Albie.

How Flanagan will approach this project is yet to be seen, but for Stephen King to entrust it to him after initially being apprehensive is hopefully a good sign. The director had stated that upon being given the necessary approval, he had worked up a script in a single weekend. This shows just how passionate he is to make this movie and, with a stacked cast like this, it’s hard to imagine it not working.
