Poison Ivy’s independent journey has been detailed in her self-titled series, but it seems the iconic villainess could be turning over a new leaf.
The path Harley Quinn took to become a DC Comics anti-hero was well documented in her titular series and now, Poison Ivy seems to be following in her footsteps. Poison Ivy #8 places Pamela Isley on a new path somewhere between villain and hero. While she isn’t emotionally equipped to save every person in the world, she wants to make a difference for some people – and for the world itself. Despite having hope that she can make a positive impact in her own way, she has a long road to go before she can be an anti-hero like Harley.
As of late, Harley Quinn has been working with the Bat-Family as well her own companions to improve Gotham for its citizens. She began by taking on the rehabilitation of clown criminals and has since saved Ivy. She has proved that she has left her old life behind her for something new – of her own choosing. This change, however, led to a rift opening between her and Poison Ivy.
Poison Ivy has been on her own since she and Harley split up. Poison Ivy #8 has the creative team of G. Willow Wilson, Atagun Ilhan, Arif Prianto, Ivan Plascencia, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou and follows Ivy as she progresses towards being an anti-hero. Instead of trying to destroy the world with the fungus she’s been spreading, she is focusing on eliminating environmentally hazardous corporations. Considering how upset Ivy has been since losing her Queen Ivy abilities, she has made lots of progress towards believing that Harley may just be right about her potential to be more than just a villainess.
Poison Ivy Still Has a Long Road to Redemption Ahead
Ivy began her independent series by plotting to destroy life on Earth via botanical means. She spread a fungus that may not be as death-inducing as she originally believed. However, along the way, she has met and reunited with a few people who are slowly changing her mind about what she wants. Previously she wanted to regain her Queen Ivy abilities and take down Jason Woodrue, the scientist responsible for her initial transformation. However, these plans have not been as satisfying and fulfilling as she previously believed them to be. As a result, while reflecting on her time with Harley, she has shifted gears away from pure villainy to a hybridized form of heroism – anti-heroism.
Pamela Isley has often been fighting against corporate greed and exploitation of the Earth. Her origins frequently revolve around this notion. Yet over the years she has occasionally sidestepped from this as a mainstay villain in Gotham. Now she is getting back to her roots, and may be turning over a new leaf in the process. With a heightened focus on corporations and more empathy towards humanity in general, she is starting down the path Harley walked before – but her way. Harley’s first step was to help her own community that would be overlooked and in many ways, Ivy is doing the same thing.
As Ivy progressed closer toward her evil goals, she was accompanied by a hallucination of Batman, who advised her and questioned her actions and consciousness. While she isn’t prepared to join the Bat-Family as an ally, she is still using her long-time foe as a mentor of sorts, as she is driven by her love for Harley and appreciation for individual people she’s met along the way. Her approach to punishing her foes doesn’t put her any closer to being a hero, but Poison Ivy’s intentions are giving her a redemption story in DC Comics that Harley Quinn has already undergone and encouraged her ex to do.
