Summary

  • Paramount has pushed back the release date of A Quiet Place: Day One, the prequel to the successful franchise, by two months due to recent release date changes caused by Hollywood’s ongoing strike action.
  • The prequel, directed by Michael Sarnoski, will offer viewers a different perspective of the alien invasion in a crowded urban environment, contrasting with the rural settings of the previous films.
  • A Quiet Place: Day One will explore the initial origins of the alien invasion and the characters’ unfamiliarity with the aliens’ hunting methods, possibly leading to a larger role for dialogue and communication in the film.

Paramount has pushed A Quiet Place: Day One, the upcoming prequel to John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place movies, back two months amid a slate of recent release date changes. First announced in 2020, A Quiet Place: Day One is based on an original story created by Krasinski; however, directorial duties have been handed over to up-and-coming director Michael Sarnoski, who made his own feature debut with 2021’s Pig starring Nicolas Cage. Led by Academy Award-winning actor Lupita Nyong’o, the prequel’s impressive cast also includes Stranger Things’ Joseph Quinn and A Quiet Place Part II’s Djimon Hounsou.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount has pushed back A Quiet Place: Day One’s release date from March 8, 2024 to June 28, 2024. As part of a series of moves prompted by delays caused by Hollywood’s ongoing strike action, the new horror prequel will now take the slot originally planned for Mission: Impossible 8. Other affected movies also include the Ryan Reynolds and Krasinski comedy IF (May 17, 2024), and an as-yet-untitled SpongeBob SquarePants movie (December 19, 2025).

How A Quiet Place: Day One Will Differ From The Other Franchise Films

When Krasinski released his original 2018 movie A Quiet Place, its simple yet extraordinarily clever premise would earn the film considerable praise and a slew of award nominations. Largely forgoing the use of spoken dialogue as a means of avoiding the movie’s acoustically sensitive aliens, its deliberate use of silence deepened the suspense and heightened the incredible performances of its talented cast. Given the overwhelming success of the first Quiet Place, there was little surprise when both additional sequels and a spinoff were announced.

Yet while Krasinski was able to shape a unique and intriguing post-apocalyptic landscape with both A Quiet Place and its 2020 sequel, Sarnoski’s film appears set to deliver viewers a different take on the established franchise. While Krasinski’s movies largely focused on rural settings, A Quiet Place: Day One will offer viewers a look at the alien invasion from one of Earth’s most heavily populated cities. Set in New York City’s crowded and bustling urban environment, the strategies used by characters in the previous films to avoid detection are likely to be much harder to achieve.

Moreover, with the prequel also charting the initial origins of the alien invasion responsible for wiping out much of the human populace, it is also likely that people would not yet be aware of the aliens’ unique form of hunting. As such, it is possible that dialogue and other forms of communication will likely play a much larger role than in the original movies. Whether A Quiet Place: Day One will prove as successful as the original movies remains to be seen, and now it would seem audiences will have to wait a little longer to find out with the prequel’s newest release date.
