Sony Is Doubling Down On Its Spider-Man Multiverse – Armessa Movie News

[ad_1]

Spider-Man is currently going through an interesting but potentially confusing multiverse storyline, and Sony keeps adding to it with two other projects. Following his big screen debut in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and other adventures in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man movies, Spider-Man was finally able to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to a deal between Sony and Marvel. This means that Spider-Man is not only part of the MCU but also the lead of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, though the latter is focusing on expanding its own universe by bringing various characters (villains and anti-heroes) to the big screen.

Sony’s universe began in 2018 with Venom, and continued to expand with Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Morbius, with these including mid-credits scenes that linked them to the MCU’s multiverse. This leaves the door wide open for these characters to cross paths with Spider-Man at some point, but Sony is now also expanding the Spider-Man multiverse with two other projects: Madame Web and the live-action TV series Silk: Spider Society. Both have important ties to the multiverse and will further expand the Spider-Verse, which can even make way for a new lead in this universe while Peter Parker handles other issues in the MCU.

The Multiverse Is A Major Part Of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe

The multiverse the current version of Spider-Man is involved in started in the MCU, but it has now branched out to Sony, further connecting these two. The MCU began properly exploring its multiverse in Phase 4, the beginning of what’s now called the Multiverse Saga, and Spider-Man was at the center of multiversal chaos in Spider-Man: No Way Home. After asking Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to cast a spell that would make everyone forget he’s Spider-Man, as his identity had been revealed to the world, they ended up accidentally opening the gates of the multiverse. This allowed villains from past Spider-Man movies, as well as the two known variants of the web-slinger, to cross over into the MCU. Luckily, Spider-Man asked Strange to cast a spell that would make everyone forget him, thus closing the gates but leaving him completely alone.

The mid-credits scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home revealed that the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Lizard, and Electro weren’t the only characters from Sony’s side to cross over into the MCU, as Venom was also brought in for a while – and the symbiote left a piece of itself in the MCU. Venom itself confirmed the connection between the MCU’s multiverse and Sony’s universe by recognizing Holland’s Peter, thus making it more possible that these two characters will meet. Sony’s Spider-Man universe will continue to expand with Kraven the Hunter, El Muerto, Madame Web, and a third Venom movie, but out of all these, Madame Web is the one who, at least for now, has important ties to the multiverse thanks to the Web of Life and Destiny.

The Web of Life and Destiny is a three-dimensional construct in five-dimensional space that acts as a model of the entire multiverse, thus allowing travel between realities. Madame Web, along with the many incarnations of Spider-Man across the multiverse, derive their powers from the Web of Life, and as such, they are considered totemic entities (more on this soon). On one occasion, Miles Morales shattered the Siege Perilous, which The Goblin used to cause disturbances to the multiverse, but its shattering spread across multiple realities. Its fragments began pulling themselves together along with the world they reside in, so Madame Web conjured the Web of Realities to allow the Spider-Men of her world to find and restore these pieces before the worlds collided in on each other.

Silk: Spider Society Doubles Down On The Multiverse

Many projects from Sony’s Spider-Man universe have been trapped in development hell for a long time, among those one involving Silk. Initially developed as a movie, Silk was later planned to be a TV show, and it’s now confirmed to happen as such under the title Silk: Spider Society. The series will kick off a Spider-Man-based TV universe, and while plot details haven’t been revealed yet, the title already says a lot. In the comics, the Spider Society is a secret society started in 1099 A.D. with the purpose of worshipping totemic spider deities. Now, Spider-Totems are multiversal supernatural entities created by the elder goddess Neith and linked to the Web of Life and Destiny.

The Great Totems are the Great Weaver, the Gatekeeper, the Other, the Bride, the Master Weaver, and the Patternmaker, and they can choose avatars or manifest independently. The Great Weaver is Kwaku Anansi, the first Spider-Man, who desiring further enlightenment, struck a deal with the sky god Nyambe, offering his eternal service in exchange for enlightenment, and vanished from the mortal world. Anansi’s power and knowledge are transmitted to spiders everywhere across the Web of Life and Destiny. Silk is the avatar of the Bride, the totem whose role is weaving hidden threads, allowing Spider-Totems to arise through chance, magic, curses, or unwanted luck. The Spider Society, the Spider-Totems, and Silk are all connected, and they also link to the Web of Life and Destiny, thus showing another side of the multiverse that is even more complex than the one in the MCU so far.

Is Silk The Spider-Totem Of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe?

Spider-Man Tom Holland and Silk

The introduction of Spider-Totems is a good thing for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, as it solves the big problem of where and how to use Spider-Man without clashing with what he has gone through in the MCU. With Sony paving the way for the introduction of Spider-Totems, Silk could turn out to be the totem of Sony’s universe, allowing the studio to tell Spider-Man stories using her instead of Peter Parker. This way, there would be no competition between Spider-Man and Silk, as they have their own purpose and place in their respective universes. Madame Web and Silk are bringing a lot of juicy multiverse material to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe that, if handled correctly, can solve some of this universe’s many problems with the current Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
