The Star Wars sequel trilogy introduced the villainous Kylo Ren, whose fate gets a new direction in amazing Ben Solo fan art. Kylo Ren first appeared in 2015 in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the son of Princess Leia and Han Solo who was obsessed with living up to Darth Vader’s dark legacy. Throughout the trilogy, however, the pull Kylo feels from the light side becomes stronger, and he begins a tumultuous redemption arc.
In a new work, artist UzuriArt imagines how Ben Solo’s character might have been styled if he had not joined the Knights of Ren.
The artist takes a redeemed Kylo Ren, aka Ben Solo, and portrays him to look more like his smuggler father. Complete with a blaster as well as his lightsaber, this version of Ben Solo has a more rugged, roguish look than the one he has as the Master of the Knights of Ren. While his dark pants and jacket still pay homage to Kylo’s cloak and sinister demeanor, the light grey shirt with black trimming is somewhat reminiscent of Luke’s outfit in Return of the Jedi.
How Ben Solo Might Have Changed The Star Wars Sequel Trilogy
Ben Solo’s transformation into Kylo Ren impacted almost every aspect of the Star Wars sequels, so this alternate version of him could drastically impact their story. In Uzuri’s fan art, Ben Solo wears Han’s lucky dice from the Millennium Falcon on a necklace, implying that this version of Ben not only remained on the light side of the Force but likely has a much better relationship with his family. Ben’s decision to turn to the dark side was connected to his bitter relationship with his parents and uncle, which ultimately led to the death of Han Solo and Luke’s exile.
The presence of Ben’s original lightsaber in place of Kylo Ren’s iconic crossguard lightsaber is an acknowledgment of his Jedi training. If he hadn’t turned to the dark side, perhaps other Force users would have received Jedi training from Luke. The sequel trilogy found Luke completely disillusioned by the Jedi teachings as a result of his reaction to his nephew’s fall and eventually decides the time of the Jedi is over. Had Ben grown to be a strong Jedi, perhaps Luke’s Jedi Order would still be thriving during the events of the sequels.
Kylo Ren did ultimately get his redemption and became Ben Solo once again by the end of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Unfortunately, that redemption came at the end of his life, after years of horrifying decisions and consequences. This fan art does a stunning job of imagining the character without those burdens of his evil alter ego.
