One of Post Malone and Swae Lee’s songs got the recognition it deserved. The track, ‘Sunflower,’ a song that was featured in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has become the highest-certified single in the RIAA’s history. Malone and Lee celebrated at the RIAA HQ with a giant plaque that solidifies the song’s achievement.
The RIAA tweeted that ‘Sunflower’ is now a 17x Platinum certified record, making it the highest-certified song in recording history. The song was streamed over 2.4 billion times on Spotify and debuted at number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100. Malone and Lee held a giant plaque, featuring the song’s other certified records that it received from the RIAA.
The plaque contained a glass cover with the eyes of Miles Morale’s Spider-Man on the front, similar to the album cover for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
TMZ reported that Malone was “floored” by the announcement and thanked the fans for the support he’s received. He then gave Lee a shout-out since he believed he was “the secret sauce” behind the song’s massive milestone. Malone told TMZ that it was the instrumentation and arrangement that did the “heavy lifting.”
“Thanks to all the fans! You guys made history with us! And to Post and Miles Morales, glad the music could get the attention and love it deserves. So much more to come! SREMMLIFE!”
Sony Pictures praised the song to Variety in 2019. The film company said that ‘Sunflower’ is the best song that described Morales’ journey to find his inner-Spider-Man, and the track was heartfelt, heroic, and emotional.
“Post and Swae have delivered a song that’s both heroic and emotional, which is exactly what a Spider-Man story needs. It’s anthemic, but also heartfelt — the perfect soundtrack for Miles to discover the Spider-Man inside himself,”
‘Sunflower’ was the featured single for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The song’s official music video featured clips from the film and was viewed over 1.9 billion times on YouTube. The track was nominated for multiple awards in 2019 and 2020 such as “Record of the Year” at the 2020 Grammy Awards and “Best Song” at the MTV Europe Music Awards.
Malone teased a future song with Lee to TMZ, saying that’s now being finalized. A release date and title have not been revealed.
