As part of the still-popular Isekai genre, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (also known as TenSura) has helped to reaffirm the reason so many fans and creators alike flock to the imaginative tropes of alternate universes. Originally a light novel that received a manga adaptation, the story was soon turned into an anime by Eight Bit in 2018. Now, not only is a third season of TenSura on the way, but its first theatrical film is premiering in North America next week. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime The Movie: Scarlet Bond has already seen great success in Japan, and audiences are eagerly awaiting the new story from original light novel author Fuse.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Eight Bit studio’s That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime follows an office worker who becomes a slime and enters an unfamiliar world that gives him the Kirby-esque “Predator” ability to devour anything, through which he becomes a Demon Lord and builds a peaceful kingdom known as Tempest. While the anime witnesses Rimuru Tempest’s powers grow and evolve in this new world, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond transports audiences to yet another land for a standalone story that takes place after season 2. Rimuru Tempest crosses paths with Hiiro, a survivor of the Ogre race, in a small country west of Tempest known as Raja. Screen Rant presents some fabulous first-look photos of Hiiro and other new characters in the film.

A Closer Look at That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime The Movie: Scarlet Bond

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime The Movie: Scarlet Bond introduces a new protagonist in Hiiro, whose tragic story dovetails with Rimuru’s in a rather interesting way. His people were wiped out by the Orcs in a terrible genocide for which he still feels justified rage, even as other characters in the world have forgiven the perpetrators. Naturally, this sets him against Rimuru and his loyal crew from the start and creates pathos from both sides that makes the otherwise standalone film resonate as part of the larger series.

Believing himself to be the last of the Ogres, Hiiro made Raja his new home and Towa (pictured above) his new queen. But after a strange curse threatens to take away everything he now holds dear, Hiiro decides to search for help. Of course, that is how he comes face to face with Rimuru and the Orcs responsible for his past tragedies. Based solely on this backstory, Hiiro is a worthy character for Scarlet Bond to explore and an excellent way to dive deeper into Rimuru as a conflicted character rather than as a professional at leveling up.

For anime fans who can’t wait for the third season of TenSura, there are several other Isekai stories available on Crunchyroll that might quench their thirst. Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious is a lighthearted and worthwhile romp while Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play is an older classic whose nostalgia is heartwarming. As for TenSura itself, hopefully Scarlet Bond will give audiences plenty to mull over until the season 3’s release date is officially announced.
