Golden Boy was one of the most powerful supes at Godolkin University, and while he was expected to play a major role throughout the season, many fans were blindsided by his sudden death in episode 1. Ever since Golden Boy exploded into a bloody downpour in episode 1, the mystery surrounding his actions has been the driving force behind Gen V‘s story. This major Golden Boy mystery has finally been solved in episode 6, with the true motives behind his actions being revealed.
Gen V is finally here, with the highly-anticipated live-action spin-off of Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys in the midst of season 1. The series puts a new spin on The Boys universe, with it this time focusing on a supe college known as Godolkin University. Gen V follows Marie Moreau, a young blood-bender who gets the opportunity to attend the prestigious Vought-run college. Upon her arrival, however, Marie and her friends unearth a massive Vought conspiracy that led to the death of Golden Boy. The gang now hopes to get to the bottom of it, all while Vought and its minions are after them.
Golden Boy’s Real Memories Kept Breaking Through
Before Golden Boy’s death, he suddenly remembered the existence of a facility known as The Woods as well as the fact that he had a brother named Sam. This led Golden Boy into a spiral that culminated with him killing Coach Brink, fighting Jordan, Marie, and Andre, and then ending his own life in front of a crowd of Godolkin students. While it was clear that he did remember some of these elements, Gen V previously never revealed how he remembered them or why these memories suddenly led to these violent actions. Luckily, episode 6 has finally shed some light onto this Golden Boy mystery.
As it turns out, Cate was behind Golden Boy’s memory problems the whole time. Throughout their relationship, Cate wiped Golden Boy’s mind of his memories of Sam and The Woods for Dean Shetty. Although this worked for a while, the effect of Cate’s powers soon began to wear off. Memories began breaking through, with Cate describing it like a dam breaking. Visions of Sam and The Woods suddenly began to flood back into Golden Boy’s mind, with them eventually getting so bad that it broke him. So, not only was Cate behind Golden Boy’s memories being wiped – she was also behind them breaking through once again.
Did Cate Make Golden Boy Kill Coach Brink & Take His Own Life?
Upon rediscovering his memories of The Woods, Golden Boy killed Coach Brink and took his own life. The reveal of Cate’s betrayal in Gen V episode 6 led many viewers to theorize that Cate may have commanded Golden Boy to murder Brink and take his own life, covering up Golden Boy’s realization for Vought. However, Cate makes it clear that this isn’t the case, with her not having any direct part in the events at the end of Gen V episode 1. Despite this, Cate seemed to indirectly have a hand in Golden Boy’s poor choices.
It seems as if Golden Boy may have been in a pretty bad state of mind after his memories came flooding back, with it being possible that Cate’s overuse of her powers caused Golden Boy’s mind to snap. So, even if Cate didn’t directly tell Golden Boy to do these things, her powers may have caused it. Cate’s hand in covering up Vought’s conspiracy also started the domino effect that led to Golden Boy’s death, as if he would have never had his mind wiped, he wouldn’t have killed Brink or ended his own life. The guilt from this will probably remain with Cate for the rest of her life.
Gen V’s Cate Twist Makes Golden Boy’s Death Sadder
While Golden Boy’s death was sad enough, Gen V‘s Cate twist makes it even sadder. It adds context to Golden Boy’s decision, with him possibly choosing to take his own life due to his knowledge that if he continues living, Cate will simply wipe his memories again. Although he had his mind wiped, Golden Boy seemed truly happy with Cate, so it is upsetting that the entire relationship was a Vought-backed farce. Hopefully Golden Boy will get some justice in the future, but for now, his arc is one of the saddest parts of Gen V.
