Spider-Man’s latest villain turn goes to show that the Green Goblin cannot be destroyed – instead, it spreads like a disease, evading total eradication and always making an inevitable return. Norman Osborn may have officially reformed, but the literal sins of the Goblin still haunt the Marvel Universe – with Spider-Man being their most recent host.
The Amazing Spider-Man #35 – by Zeb Wells, Patrick Gleason, Marcio Menyz, Erick Arciniega, and VC’s Joe Caramagna – forces Norman to come face-to-face with his sins, as he collaborates with Kraven to get ahold of Peter, to excise his sins from the Webslinger.
While they successfully return Peter to normal, there’s a strong hint near the end that those sins returned to Norman – or maybe they never left.
You Can Never Truly Rid Yourself of the Goblin
Norman Osborn’s reform era has always been precarious, given its supernatural impetus. Rather than turning away from villIainy, Norman’s sins were extracted from him and put into a spear, being pierced by which imparts the sins on the victim. This is ultimately how the sins were transferred over to Peter Parker. The ending of Amazing Spider-Man #35 appears to show that in the process of saving Peter, Norman absorbed the sins of the Green Goblin once more, rather than the spear as intended – but at the same time, it hints at a darker truth, that even without his sins, Norman still contains something of the Goblin in him.
This may be because the Green Goblin is who Norman Osborn truly is – or perhaps the Goblin leaves a permanent trace inside anyone it takes hold of, leaving open the possibility that they could be Goblinized again at any time. Peter Parker is not the only person to don the Green Goblin pseudonym after Norman Osborn. Readers should not forget that Harry Osborn had his own run as the Green Goblin, and several other characters have also taken up the mantle at times when the Osborns were inactive for one reason or another. Amazing Spider-Man #35 suggests there is no true escape for former Goblins.
The Dark Implications Of Amazing Spider-Man #35’s Ending
Even if neither implication ends up being the case in the long-term storytelling, readers just saw how much damage the Goblin can do, without needing Norman as its host. Readers saw the same level of damage when Harry was the Goblin’s host long ago. It goes to show that the Green Goblin is more than just a supervillain – the Goblin is a disease that spreads from person to person. Every time it seems as if the Gobiln is gone forever, he pops back up in someone else. While the Marvel Universe can be thankful there is a cure for the Green Goblin, its evil may never be eliminated completely.
