Reviewed as one of the HBO adaptation’s best episodes, and perhaps the best overall, The Last of Us episode 3 spends the bulk of its feature-length runtime on the relationship that develops between Bill (Offerman) and Frank (Bartlett). The installment, titled “Long, Long Time,” earned plaudits well before its debut and lived up to the hype. Precise in its depiction and deeply affecting thanks to the combination of writing, acting, and directing, it has left a lot of viewers wanting to see more of the couple.
In comments shared with GamesRadar+, Offerman and Bartlett discussed whether their Last of Us characters could be back for a spinoff. Leaning into the humor that made him such a hit on Parks and Recreation, Offerman joked about the possibility and said that he’s been thinking of nothing else. But more seriously, Offerman agreed that there would be a lot of potential in the idea. Bartlett, who endeared audiences with his performance as Armond in The White Lotus season 1, concurred and talked about filling in the gaps of the Frank and Bill relationship. Their quotes are below:
BARTLETT: It’s amazing in that that this episode covers such a vast chunk of time in these two people’s lives. It’s one of the things that makes it so special, seeing, from the very beginning, how this connection develops over time. It’s like a film in a way; it’s sort of complete in that it goes from beginning to end of their story. It really allows you to see the full kind of flowering of this relationship. But yeah, how great it would be to go back and fill in all those spaces?
OFFERMAN: You’re goddamn right we can imagine a spinoff. We’ve done nothing but pleasure ourselves to visions of a spinoff, prequels, epilogues, you name it. We start a family, there’s multiverse quantum physics timelines. You name it. Well, yeah, I mean, it would be wonderful to see a lot of the stuff fleshed out, a lot of the dynamics that we skipped across because we cover 20-something years. Yeah, I’d say five 10-episode seasons should probably cover it…
Would A Bill & Frank Last Of Us Spinoff Work?
Part of the reason why “Long, Long Time” leaves such an undeniable impression for many is what it accomplishes in a relatively short time. The episode, which is written by Craig Mazin and directed by Peter Hoar, splits time with Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey). The leading duo pops up for the extended opening and closing, but the lengthy middle goes to Bartlett and Offerman. Their courtship is filled with little moments that already say so much, such as their decision to get married during a time when the U.S. hadn’t legalized same-sex marriage. It’s a love story told in brief, relying on two talented performers to make the relationship feel lived-in.
As a bonus, their story also pushes Joel forward. After the devastating loss of Tess (Anna Torv), it’s a letter from Bill that seems to convince Joel of his responsibility to take care of Ellie. As the episode closes, the unlikely pair appear to genuinely bond for the first time. It’s a smart expansion of the Frank and Bill relationship, propelling the main story but also diverging from The Last of Us games and allowing Bartlett and Offerman’s characters to exit on their own terms.
A spinoff would work, in the sense that the actors involved are top-notch, and the writing would likely be as well. But it would run counter to the purpose of The Last of Us episode. By turning Frank and Bill into a franchise that must continue, it diminishes how their first appearance economically succeeds in showing how it’s possible to find new life and love even in horrific circumstances. It’s understandable why fans would want to see more, but it isn’t necessary to belabor the point.
