The Office star Rainn Wilson offers an intriguingly unhinged and timely idea for rebooting the series. During its original run, The Office was notable for how it tackled workplace issues like discrimination and harassment. These episodes were nuanced, in their own way, but they were also heightened in a way that allowed for the comedy to shine through.
Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute, offered his own heightened idea for a reboot of The Office during an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show.
Wilson’s idea would center around the topic of working remotely and then having to return to the office, which has become a frequent topic of discussion since the pandemic. In the quote below, Wilson explains that his pitch involves Dwight kidnapping “every Office cast member and bring them into Dunder Mifflin in some kind of obscure and somewhat inappropriate way“:
“It would’ve been so much fun to film The Office during the pandemic. If we had pandemic episodes, that would’ve been amazing. The Office writers were so great — they would’ve been able to spin that in some beautiful ways. I think it would be: He gets the call from corporate to get everyone back in the office and everyone is resistant. So, one at a time, Dwight has to kidnap every Office cast member and bring them into Dunder Mifflin in some kind of obscure and somewhat inappropriate way.”
What’s Been Said About An Office Reboot
The possibility of rebooting The Office has been addressed both by executives at NBC and those others more directly involved with the comedy. Series creator Greg Daniels expressed doubts that the sitcom would come back. But he’s also been more optimistic at other times, even sharing how he might approach an Office reboot. Cast members, including John Krasinski and Mindy Kaling, have likewise expressed that they’d be open to revisiting their roles if the circumstances were right.
B.J. Novak, who wrote and starred in The Office, touched on the difficulty of bringing back the show. Back in 2022, Novak said that the ship has sailed in his view as far as getting the core cast back together. Novak is also very candid about the fact that any potential revival needed to be approached as an artistic endeavor, rather than a financial decision for the sake of cashing in on an established brand.
More recently, in April of this year, a top NBC executive explained that a reboot of The Office depended on the series creator wanting to do it. Maybe a wild idea, like the one Wilson pitched, could be the thing that gets the gang back together. At the moment, however, it doesn’t seem too likely to happen.
