For fans hoping to see The Suicide Squad 2, James Gunn has some disappointing updates as he clarifies what is going on with the team after the 2021 film. With 2023 marking the end of the DCEU, DC Studios are working on the new DC Universe with Gunn and Peter Safran. However, even though they are rebooting the DC Universe, a few elements from the DCEU are making their way into the new franchise, including some of Gunn’s characters from The Suicide Squad.

What has been unclear, however, is whether or not DC Studios are considering The Suicide Squad 2, especially given Gunn’s larger role within the franchise now. During a recent appearance on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, the Smallville star attempted to get some answers out of Gunn about the Suicide Squad’s future. When asked specifically about The Suicide Squad 2, Gunn shifted the conversation onto Waller, and how characters from Peacemaker will be showing up, before clarifying that there is no movement on a sequel.

Waller is first and Waller is a lot of the same people from Peacemaker. [When asked about if The Suicide Squad 2 would happen] No.

The Suicide Squad’s Canceled Plans & Spin-Off Explained

Despite The Suicide Squad being critically received better than Suicide Squad, the studio never greenlit The Suicide Squad 2, likely due to the box office performance, which was negatively impacted by the fact that the film did come out during COVID-19. Based on Gunn’s comments, if The Suicide Squad 2 had gone forward, it wouldn’t necessarily have focused on a simple idea like bringing together a new variation of the team. Until Gunn elaborates further, time will tell what he actually had in mind.

Even though the DC Universe is mostly a reboot, many are wondering how Waller and Peacemaker will work in the new continuity, as Viola Davis and John Cena are reprising their characters from the DCEU. Whatever becomes of Waller season 1 and Peacemaker season 2 will likely be soft rebooted versions of the characters, with most of their history remaining intact from the DCEU as they carry into the DC Universe. There may be a few details changed after the events of The Flash, but it would be shocking if there were any drastic changes for Amanda and Peacemaker.

At this point, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if The Suicide Squad 2 not moving forward is because DC Studios wants to reimagine Task Force X in the DC Universe. Whenever the time is right for that team to come into play, it will give Gunn a clean slate without having to do a soft sequel, like he had to when he took over for David Ayer after Suicide Squad. But for now, the world knows for certain that The Suicide Squad 2 is not happening for the foreseeable future.
