Leica has announced the Leitz Phone 2, a successor to the Leitz 1, launched in 2021, has a striking design that stands out from other smartphones.

Leica has announced the Leitz Phone 2, a new flagship smartphone and a successor to the Leitz 1 that launched in 2021. Leica may have partnerships with phone manufacturers such as Xiaomi, but that isn’t stopping it from trying to grab a share of the premium phone market, albeit small. It is named after Leica’s founder, Ernst Leitz, the Leitz Phone 2 and its predecessor showcase Leica’s camera prowess.

Leica’s phones are based on Sharp’s own Aquos R6 and Aquos R7 smartphones but with slight modifications to the design. The 2021 Aquos R6 was the first smartphone to launch with a one-inch sensor, a feature that has now become the new trend in the smartphone industry. Earlier this year, Xiaomi joined the train with the Xiaomi 12 Ultra, and it has been reported that Oppo’s next-gen flagship will also pack a one-inch primary rear camera.

The Leica Leitz 2 has a striking design that stands out from other smartphones. The combination of the flat edge-to-edge display combined with the curved corners of the screen and the right-angled corners of the frame lends it a distinct appearance from the front. The frame has a textured finish on the sides and allows a firmer grip when holding the phone. It also has a large round camera island home to just two sensors. The Leitz Phone 2 is rated IP65/IP68 for dust and water resistance, just like its predecessor. The android flagship is in a single colorway called Leica White, with the iconic red Leica logo gracing the back.

Leica’s new smartphone packs a 6.6-inch 10-bit Pro IGZO OLED display with an incredible peak brightness of 2000 nits and a resolution of 2730 × 1260. It also has a whopping 240Hz refresh rate that can drop to as low as 1Hz to conserve power. There is a centered punch hole in the screen for a 12.6MP camera. Powering the Leitz Phone 2 is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, and it is paired with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Unlike rival flagships, there is a MicroSD card slot for adding up to an additional 1TB of storage. This will come in handy since the phone’s selling point is its camera performance.

Concerning the camera, the primary sensor on the back is a 47.2MP one-inch sensor co-developed with Sharp. The sensor has a seven-element Summicron lens with an f/1.9 aperture, a 19mm focal length, and a 6x digital zoom. Keeping it company is a 1.9MP portrait sensor with 8x digital zoom. Unfortunately, the camera island has a prominent protrusion which may make it prone to scratches. To prevent this, Leica includes a silver lens cap in the box. The Leitz Phone 2 has Bluetooth 5.2 and supports LDAC, NFC, and Wi-Fi 6. It also has a nano-SIM slot and eSIM. For security, there is a fingerprint scanner and support for Face Unlock.

Leica’s new phone packs a 5000mAh battery. It doesn’t say the fast charging rating, but it is stated on the product page that a full charge should take about 100 minutes. The phone supports USB Power Delivery and PPS fast charging. It also has support for wireless charging. Leica ships the Leitz Phone 2 with Android 12 with a custom UI on top. The phone is limited to Japan for now, where Softbank sells it for JPY 225,360 (~$1587).
