Looking through the battle-damaged ’bots, there are several recognizable faces. Skybound previously released the line-up of Transformers appearing in the series, with Optimus Prime, Arcee, Ratchet, Cliffjumper and Wheeljack representing the Autobots and Starscream, Soundwave, Skywarp, Rumble and Laserbeak on the Decepticon side. Many of those characters can be made out in the wreckage, in addition to a few others, with what looks to be Autobots Prowl, Ironhide and Bumblebee strewn about. It’s also worth pointing out that the first Transformer to appear in the Energon Universe, Jetfire, can also be seen approaching from the sky in the last page of the preview.

The art released thus far highlights how the Transformers will be taking a beating in the Energon continuity, raising the stakes for the characters immeasurably in the new storyline. In Daniel Warren Johnson’s preview, Optimus Prime has a jacked-up eye, and both he and Starscream have cracked and broken windshields. Given that the Transformers were merely “in stasis” after crash-landing on Earth in the original G1 cartoon, it’s a pretty big swing to show them utterly wrecked from a catastrophic war which saw the Decepticons taking control of Cybertron. In the Energon Universe, the Autobots and Decepticons will be playing for keeps. The beginning of the Transformers ongoing series will set the bedrock foundation for the Energon Universe, which will continue with several upcoming G.I. Joe books, such Duke #1. Quickly, Skybound Entertainment’s shared continuity is becoming one of the biggest publishing initiatives in the comic book industry’s contemporary landscape. To see how the Transformers story plays out in this version of events, and to see how much of a pounding the Robots in Disguise will have to take, fans of the franchise won’t want to miss a single issue of Daniel Warren Johnson’s series, or any of the relation Energon Universe material.Source: Skybound Transformers #1 is on sale October 4, 2023 from Skybound Entertainment.
