Nearly two months after she revealed her process, Wednesday star Jenna Ortega is seemingly being mocked by those participating in the writer’s strike for her comments about changing lines in the show. After failed negotiations of their union contract, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) recently went on strike. The WGA members had previously demanded changes, namely streaming compensation, benefits packages, and AI usage policies. When Hollywood failed to meet their demands, the writers took to the picket lines in a strike that could last up to months.
During a recent demonstration, as noted by some users on Twitters, writers participating in the strike were seen holding up signs taking aim at a variety of celebrities and projects, including seemingly mocking Wednesday‘s Jenna Ortega for her claims of making changes to her lines on set. Others swiftly took to defending the young star, stating that the various posts and picket signs were meant to be from a point of humor, not attack, and that those saying otherwise are attacking the striking writers themselves. Jenna Ortega’s Line Changes Explained
Ortega, who plays the titular character in Netflix hit Wednesday, has made frequent reference to her investment in her character of the Addams family daughter. One such comment this spring saw Ortega reveal that she would make on-set, sometimes spontaneous, line changes during the Wednesday filming. According to Ortega, some of the writers included lines too conventional for a teen show that “did not make sense for her character at all.”
While some took this as evidence of Ortega’s deep investment in her Wednesday role, others found that this revealed a disrespect Ortega had towards the writers that crafted her role in the first place. Ortega even mentioned in her statement that she “even became unprofessional in a sense,” which saw her changing lines without informing the script supervisor nor the writing team. No matter how entwined in Wednesday’s psyche Ortega found herself, the comments seemed to have an overall tone of condescension towards the writers’ room.
This “I-know-best” attitude has seemingly come back to haunt Ortega during the WGA strike. Though the comments were several months ago, the potential discourse from writers indicates writers have not forgotten about the incident. In the wake of ongoing negotiations, it is disheartening that a high-profile actor like Ortega would make such seemingly thoughtless comments towards writers. Early still in the strikes, there is time for the Wednesday star to initiate an apology, should the writers be genuinely upset.
