Although the Elves believe that the dark lord Morgoth has been defeated for good, his chief lieutenant, Sauron, is on the rise. The High Elven King Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker) makes the mistake of sending the Elven warriors to sail off to Valinor. Shortly after, the young boy Theo (Tyroe Muhafidin) discovers a mysterious sword within his family home.

Theo lives in the Southland of Middle-earth with his mother, Bronwyn (Nazanin Boniadi), the villager’s healer. Bronwyn is secretly in a forbidden relationship with the Silvan Elf Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova). The Silvan Elves watch over the lands of men to ensure that an uprising does not occur. During the war against Morgoth, some humans chose to join the dark lord’s army and fight for the forces of evil. However, because Gil-galad does not believe Galadriel’s warnings, Arondir and the others at his post are called home.

Theo Finds a Mysterious Dark Blade Hidden in His Village

Theo discovers the remains of a mysterious black sword hilt in a local barn that he is exploring. The blade begins to glow with the symbol of Sauron, now known to be a map of Mordor, which was also visible on the corpse of Galdriel’s brother, Finrod (Will Fletcher). Theo might not know what is actually going on with the blade, he stashes it and hides it from his mother.

When Theo is wounded after he and his mother are attacked by an Orc, he picks up the hilt as they flee and a drop of his blood ignites the hilt and transforms it into smoke. The hilt begins to glow with dark energy and reform into a full blade. Although the sword’s owner is not revealed, the area is full of descendants of the people loyal to Morgoth.

Theo learns about the sword’s origins from the mysterious old man Waldreg (Geoff Morrell). In the fourth episode, “The Great Wave,” Waldreg tells Theo that the sword “is a power, fashioned for our ancestors by his master’s own hand.” This “master” would be Sauron himself, who inspired many of the men in the Southlands to join in Morgoth’s army.

Although Theo is tempted by the sword’s power, he ultimately reveals it to Arondir in the fifth episode, “Partings.” Arondir realizes that the sword is a weapon that will help Sauron in his conquest of the Southlands. When Adar (Joseph Mawle) and his armies approach, Arondir hides the broken weapon away so that their enemy can’t uncover it.

What Is the Sword’s Connection to Mount Doom?

The sixth episode, “Udûn,” reveals that this mysterious weapon is what instigates Sauron’s return to prominence. Adar nearly gets a grasp of this enigmatic blade when he corners Arondir, Theo, and Bronywn. Against Arondir’s demands, Theo reveals the sword’s location to Adar in order to save his mother. Fortunately, this is also when Galadriel, Halbrand (Charlie Vickers), and the Númenórean launch a surprise attack that overwhelms Adar’s armies.

However, Adar gives Waldreg a secret task before he is captured by Galadriel and Halbrand. As the humans and Elves are celebrating and Halbrand is named King, Theo realizes that the sword he thought he had uncovered is actually a decoy. Waldreg has stolen the real sword and taken it into the heart of the city. He plunges the blade deep into a mechanism that causes a dam to burst, flooding the village and surrounding area with water.

Galadriel has previously learned that Sauron’s sigil is actually a map of the Southlands and the tunnels that Adar’s army were building. This entire area is flooded, and magma begins to bubble beneath the surface. As the heroes desperately run to safety, the mountain explodes in a fiery eruption. We know from The Lord of the Rings that this is Mount Doom, where Sauron will first forge the “One Ring to Rule Them All.”

Sauron uses the One Ring to take mortal form and amass his armies. However, the titular “rings of power” have not been constructed yet. Elrond (Robert Aramayo) is sent by the Elven leaders to join Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) in his forge. Tolkien’s mythology refers to Celebrimbor as the architect of the rings, who was deceived by Sauron in disguise.

The corrupting nature of power is a major theme in all of Tolkien’s work. It’s partially drawn from his own personal experiences; Tolkien served in the British Army and grew concerned about the rise of weapons manufacturing. The “One Ring” was conceived as an object that drew out people’s worst impulses. The alliance of men, Dwarves, and Elves in The Lord of the Rings can be seen as a parallel to the unification of the Allies. The Rings of Power focuses on similar themes that would coincide with the pre-World War II era.
