Eventually, he uncovers the Armitage family’s dark secret: they transplant people’s brains into others’ bodies, granting wealthy white bidders the traits they desire as well as a twisted sense of immortality, all at the expense of the Black people they target. One of only a handful of horror movies nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, Get Out is, in part, so effective because of its unsettling atmosphere — a Stepford Wives-esque feel that’s achieved thanks to the movie’s filming locations.
Filming For Get Out Happened In Mobile, Alabama
Get Out was shot in just 23 days, with filming eventually moving to Mobile, Alabama when Los Angeles, California, proved to be too costly. While Alabama certainly isn’t Upstate New York, the film team was able to find a solid stand-in. To recreate the eerie, perfect-on-the-outside feel of Rose’s hometown, Get Out shot in Mobile’s Ashland Place Historic District. “I went to Alabama with my own stereotypes and preconceived notions about getting chased out,” Jordan Peele told Vulture. “But I have to say, the stereotypes were proved wrong.“
Location-wise, one of the most recognizable Ashland Place scenes occurs in the film’s opening: Andre Hayworth (LaKeith Stanfield) is abducted on a dark suburban street. According to production notes, this unsettling opening sequence was shot at the intersection of DeLeon and Ryan Avenue in Mobile. Given Get Out‘s indie-level budget of just $4.5 million, Peele and his team found ways to get the most mileage out of their unique filming location. For example, when the Armitage house didn’t have anything useable for the family’s basement of horrors, the team found a perfect location at Barton Academy in Mobile.

Before Mobile, Get Out‘s film team started principal photography in Fairhope, Alabama. Some of Jordan Peele’s scariest scenes from Get Out unfold in this shoreline community off Mobile Bay. Most of the film takes place at the Armitage family home, which is supposed to be in Upstate New York, but the private residence at 6892 Heathcroft Lane in Fairhope is a solid substitute. “[In] a weird way the house is the movie,” co-producer Beatriz Sequeira told Vulture of the scouting process. Without a doubt, the residence the Get Out team picked will go down in film history as one of the most recognizable — and haunting — horror movie homesteads.
