Following a reduced role in season 2, The Morning Show season 3, episode 4 saw the unfortunate return of Fred Micklen when he crashed Cory’s after-party. The Morning Show season 3 added new cast members after the loss of one of its biggest stars when Mitch (Steve Carell) died in season 2. Viewers and characters alike may have been hoping that with Mitch’s death, Fred would also be disappearing from the series for good. However, Fred’s appearance in The Morning Show season 3, episode 4 not only marked his return but showed that he’s not planning on leaving again anytime soon.

It was revealed that he’d been giving female employees like Hannah promotions and hush money when they tried to report Mitch’s sexual misconduct. Everything came to a head in The Morning Show season 1 finale when Bradley and Alex exposed Fred live on air for the dangerous role he’d played in allowing Mitch’s behavior to continue unchecked.

Following this, in the time jump before The Morning Show season 2, Fred was put on administrative leave while he was investigated and eventually given $119.2 million in payout to leave UBA. Still, Fred continued to play the victim when Hannah’s dad filed a wrongful death lawsuit, attempting to launch a smear campaign against her. The Morning Show season 3 has teased Cory’s downfall already, but Fred might be the final nail in Cory’s coffin.

Cory and Stella are opposed to Fred being involved with UBA in any way, let alone financially, but they might be left with no other option. There still could be some hope in the Paul Marks deal thanks to Alex, but their budding friendship doesn’t get rid of the major obstacle that is Cory and his ego.
