Following a reduced role in season 2, The Morning Show season 3, episode 4 saw the unfortunate return of Fred Micklen when he crashed Cory’s after-party. The Morning Show season 3 added new cast members after the loss of one of its biggest stars when Mitch (Steve Carell) died in season 2. Viewers and characters alike may have been hoping that with Mitch’s death, Fred would also be disappearing from the series for good. However, Fred’s appearance in The Morning Show season 3, episode 4 not only marked his return but showed that he’s not planning on leaving again anytime soon.

The Morning Show season 3 has been surprising and unpredictable thus far, with Fred’s appearance in episode 4 adding to the shock factor. In its first few episodes, The Morning Show has mainly focused on the cyberhack and its consequences, meaning characters like Fred, who isn’t supposed to be involved in UBA, weren’t a part of the story. With the two-year time jump, it seemed like Fred might never come back, but like Mitch, there really is no way to be truly rid of him in The Morning Show as long as he’s still living.

Fred Micklen Was Fired As UBA’s President In The Morning Show Season 2

Fred was first introduced in The Morning Show season 1 as UBA president and a longtime friend of Mitch’s. Throughout the first season, he was in conflict with Cory, Alex, and Bradley, as they tried to change and improve UBA’s work environment while he was stuck in his old ways. It was revealed that he’d been giving female employees like Hannah promotions and hush money when they tried to report Mitch’s sexual misconduct. Everything came to a head in The Morning Show season 1 finale when Bradley and Alex exposed Fred live on air for the dangerous role he’d played in allowing Mitch’s behavior to continue unchecked.

Following this, in the time jump before The Morning Show season 2, Fred was put on administrative leave while he was investigated and eventually given $119.2 million in payout to leave UBA. Still, Fred continued to play the victim when Hannah’s dad filed a wrongful death lawsuit, attempting to launch a smear campaign against her. Even Mitch refused to support Fred in this, proving how awful Fred was in The Morning Show.

After Mitch’s death in The Morning Show season 2, Fred made his last appearance at Mitch’s memorial in episode 9. While at the memorial, he filmed Alex’s speech where she revealed she’d visited Mitch in Italy and had seen him just before he died. Fred then leaked it online to expose her and the network as hypocritical, and with his reappearance in The Morning Show season 3, his vendetta against Alex and Cory continues.

Fred Crashing Cory’s Party Sets Up His Revenge In Season 3

In The Morning Show season 3, episode 4, Fred crashed Cory’s UBA Upfronts after-party to let him know that he had consulted on the massive loan Cory obtained for the network. Accepting the loan would mean Cory would have to run every fiscal decision for UBA by Fred, giving him immense power, but not accepting it could lead to bankruptcy. The Morning Show season 3 has teased Cory’s downfall already, but Fred might be the final nail in Cory’s coffin.

Cory and Stella are opposed to Fred being involved with UBA in any way, let alone financially, but they might be left with no other option. There still could be some hope in the Paul Marks deal thanks to Alex, but their budding friendship doesn’t get rid of the major obstacle that is Cory and his ego. Regardless of what happens with the loan, viewers can count on Fred being a nagging negative force, perhaps even all the way through The Morning Show season 4.
